interesting discussion on pricing of fiction books

I found this one very fascinating for the insider look at the publishing industry.

It focuses on "literary" fiction, but it's relevant to all fiction publishing and even though it's not about e-books per se, it addresses also a lot of stuff we discuss around here about costs, payouts to authors and the like.

I'm surprised this hasn't generated more discussion than it has. It takes some work to wade through, but it really does give some insight into book pricing, publishing, and why the hardcover is not likely to go away any time soon.

Weekends tend to be a bit lightly traveled around here.

Interesting, but too time-consuming to filter through for me right now. (And the format doesn't make it any easier.)

Figuring Out the Book Business

One more article in this discussion summarizing some facts about the book business. Quote:

"Question: Is the book business profitable?

Answer: You better believe it. It's funny that many non-industry people assume that book publishing is a depressed or stagnant business. In fact, as recently as several months ago I wrote here on LitKicks that book publishing is generally an unprofitable business, to which my friend and fellow blogger Mary Delli Santi asked "Where did you get that idea?" My assumption was way off, and a simple look at the financial results released by the major media conglomerates sets the record straight."
