MS Office 2007 Ultimate for $59 (if you got .edu)

via NYT:

Quote:
The semester may be ending, but that doesn’t mean the educational discounts have dried up for the summer — yet. Actively enrolled college students with .edu e-mail addresses (and carrying at least a 0.5-credit course load) have one more day to snag a copy of Microsoft Office Ultimate for a mere $60 at www.theultimatesteal.com. The 91-percent-off deal ends May 16th at 11:59 p.m., and Microsoft has full details for the offer at www.microsoft.com/education/ultimatesteal.mspx.

Here is the really cool part, and I got this straight from the Microsoft senior vice president selling the software, Chris Capossela: anyone with a .edu address can get this deal. Most college alumni offices give their graduates .edu addresses.
There is also an update note that says that MS makes you pay the full price if they find out that you are not enrolled anymore... sure if they got access to all university databases.

Well I tried (until the checkout screen), and here is what the license agreement says:

Quote:
Promotion Eligibility : This offer is good only to eligible students who possess a valid email address at an educational institution geographically located in the United States. This offer is non-transferable. Limit one purchase per eligible student.

The following conditions serve to define student eligibility for the Promotion:

1. Individual must possess a valid e-mail address at a U.S. educational institution which contains the domain suffix .edu; AND
2. Individual must be a student at a U.S. educational institution and must be actively enrolled in at least 0.5 course credit and be able to provide proof of enrollment upon request.

Microsoft or an appointed vendor may contact you to verify that you are a current student. If documentation is not provided indicating that you are a current student, you will be liable to reimburse Microsoft for the full retail cost of the software ($679)

You can get MS Office 2007 Home and Student for $109 at Amazon. The license allows for installation on 3 devices.

Or you can get Open Office, at a cost of $0, and install it on as many machines as you want! What a bargain!

Ok, I like open source as much as the next guy. But, with Open Office you truly get what you pay for.

I wonder if taking a photography course at the local Comm Coll counts?

If you can get a email acount with an .edu suffix then why not?

Here in the UK I know of several people who have signed up for extramural classes largely for the computer accounts, giving access to electronic resources such as Jstor.

My work is through the Mayo Health System, so all our e-mail addresses are.edu, since we're technically a university. So I just have to take the photg course I've been looking at to get a deep discount on Office. Cool.

... well, because MS threatens to charge you an extra of $620 if they find out that you are not currently enrolled.

Of course, there are countries where agreeing with the EULA does not make it legally binding (such as Germany)...

I managed to get it last year in the UK, but this years offer here has expired.
They will probably have a new offer out sometime in September when the new academic session starts.

The good part about this is that it is the ultimate edition, with everything but the kitchen sink. The student edition is pretty basic and doesn't have things like outlook, access, etc.

And no offence, Open office is no where near the functionality of MS Office. I did try using it for a while, but gave up after becoming frustrated with the formatting errors that would sometimes occur.
