Unhappy Book cover not fullscreen?

Hi, the problem I'm facing is illustrated in the photos I took:

[Image violates Posting Guidelines for size - MODERATOR]

The left one is the first page, and the second is when the device is in sleep mode.

I'm using calibre for epub->kepub conversion and I'm wondering why is there empty space on left and right? This happens to all my ebooks.

I'm using Kobo Glo HD with the latest firmware.

Thank you in advance for any help!

The space at the sides is because the aspect ratio of the cover image doesn't exactly match the aspect ratio of the screen.

For the cover in the book, it is up to the publisher to choose how to display the image. They can choose to preserve the aspect ratio, or stretch the image to fill the screen. You can change it by editing the book's CSS stylesheet and/or HTML cover page.

For the cover on the sleep screen, the firmware preserves the aspect ratio. But if you want to stretch the cover you can use Calibre to do that by customising the KoboTouch (or KoboTouchExtended?) driver options: Tick the "Upload covers" box, and untick the "Keep cover aspect ratio" box.

(Note that if you resend the book to the device -- or use the KoboUtilities plugin to upload the covers without resending the book -- after changing the cover options, you will probably need to reboot the device before the new cover will show up.)

The other thing, is that this is a kepub rather than an epub. The device handles covers for the two types differently. For an epub, the first page is rendered and that is used as the cover. For kepubs, an image in the book is marked as the cover, and this is extracted and used as the cover. It is resized for the various places it is displayed, but the aspect ratio is kept.

What that means is that if you make sure the cover image in the library is the correct aspect ratio, when calibre updates the cover during the conversion or send-to-device, it will put a cover in the book that will fill the screen. I don't really know which of these is the better option.

In the two photos above, the cover that fills the screen looks stretched because it is stretched. The second cover looks good because it's aspect ratio correct and looks good.

So don't go with a fullscreen cover as some can look really poor stretched. Go with the correct aspect ratio.

So what is the "correct aspect ratio" for imaginary buildings and aircraft

I honestly can't see anything wrong with the pic on the left - even if it is stretched. How would I know it was stretched if the pic on the right wasn't there?

The correct aspect ratio is how it was created. The cover on the right we know is correct because it's a pBook cover and they don't have an aspect that's fullscreen.

Now if your eBook is also going to be a pBook, then you'd be going for the aspect of a pBook cover.
