Radcliffe, Ann: Gaston de Blondeville. v1 1 Nov 2119
Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was the most famous English Gothic novelist of her time, and the one best at melding themes of mystery, suspense, and romance. She was renowned for her descriptions of the countryside, and her works contain several poems.
Gaston de Blondeville was her last book. It seems to have been written in 1802, but was not published until 1826, three years after her death. It is her only novel set in England, in the reign of King Henry the Third, and contains a ghost as an important character. The book contrasts the fates of a noble soldier, the ghost, and a merchant who accuses the soldier of murder and robbery.
