Nesbit, Edith: Tales of Darkness (Collection) v2. 19 Sep 2015
Tales of Darkness
by Edith Nesbit (1858–1924) First published 1888 ~ 1918. The text of this book is in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA. ----------------- Edith Nesbit Bland, English author and poet, published approximately 40 books for children under the name of E. Nesbit. Her innovative body of work influenced many subsequent fantasy writers. Nesbit’s reputation rests almost exclusively on her work for children, but she also wrote for adults. In addition to about a dozen novels for adults, she published many short stories (often under the name E. Bland). Presented here, from the darker side of Edith Nesbit, twenty-one twenty-three elegant tales of mystery, murder, and the supernatural. Come along and explore the realms of dread: Passion, obsession, and madness; death most mysterious and murder most foul; ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night. Have you the mettle to read alone at night by candlelight? --------------------- This is my own compilation, taken from several sources. Text was obtained from gutenberg.org, archive.org, hathitrust.org. Punctuation, diacritics, and italics have been formatted; spelling and punctuation modernized/standardized. Chapter heads are cross-linked to in-line Table of Contents. Embedded fonts for titles, dropcaps. ---------------------- There are still several stories I have been unable to find anywhere as etext or pdf (The Violet Car, The Shadow, The Detective). At least half of the stories included in this collection are not available as etext anywhere except in the magazine archives, although many of them have been published in anthologies in the late twentieth century (But I bet you can't find "The New Samson" in any of those collections!) So, settle back, and enjoy some prime Victorian-era horror fiction. . ************ ETA --- Uploaded version 2, with two additional stories. Previous downloads 165. This work is assumed to be in the Life+70 public domain OR the copyright holder has given specific permission for distribution. Copyright laws differ throughout the world, and it may still be under copyright in some countries. Before downloading, please check your country's copyright laws. Not allowed to give you karma right now, but you know how I love your Nesbits. Have only read some of the children's stuff so far, so I'm certainly looking forward to this! Cheers!!

Thanks for your efforts here Granny,...something perhaps for stormy nights headed this way in the coming months,... along with Algernon Blackwood....a.o.
I must confess that I've not yet read her. I also got to learn the difference between an up-cap and a drop-cap in the process,...chose for the up. |

HALLOWEEN TREAT!
A Halloween treat for Nesbit fans!
A good Samaritan found two of my missing stories, and I have updated the book. I have added "The Shadow" (are you sure that is only your own shadow following behind you?); and "The Violet Car" (long before Stephen King came along to write "Christine", there was the vengeful violet car!). Hope you enjoy these great spooky stories. |
