I'm sure TPB will be replaced with another similar site (probably before I finish hitting "submit" to this post). There's a whole history of this going back years. TPB was hardly the first large torrent tracker, and will no doubt be followed by others. The media companies still haven't learned that shutting down the sites doesn't stop anybody. As soon as you kill one, another springs up. They can play that cat and mouse game forever and not accomplish anything. |

I'm trying to wrap my mind around this - what exactly was purchased? The website? I have my own website and it costs me $11.50/year. Not the business model, because they're planning to change it. The name? Lot of good that will do them with the changed business model.
Lots of servers, I guess, but you can buy those pretty cheaply these days. I don't get it at all. |

The "brand" - that's what's worth the money these days.

But will they dump the titles off the servers? Or just add a shopping cart to the existing website? How long will it take to track down the copyright status of these titles and whom to send the cash to?

By the time they jump through all the hoops to "legitimize" the site, they'll have gotten rid of everything that people used them for in the first place (free exchange of data). Nobody will go to a commercial TPB if it no longer offers what they wanted it for in the first place. In addition to stronger policing of the content, they'll also most likely turn it into a pay site (which Napster also did) and watch helplessly as most of the users switch to another tracker. |

Supernova -> Mininova -> TPB -> something else The only thing special about any of these is that they were popular. There's nothing unique that they did which the media companies are getting rid of when they shut one down. All the users just go somewhere else. They keep putting the horses back in the barn, but it doesn't do any good because they can't shut the door. |

What happened to the Japanese p2p app from last year, the one that was basically Freenet but didn't suck? That looked really promising, centralised but completely secure and private. I've no doubt that if (when) TPB dies, there'll be a shift to something newer.
