New Likebook - Can't transfer files

I just received a Likebook Mimas today, but if anyone reading this has any Likebook with a USB C port, I am hoping you can help (since the Mimas just started shipping and there aren't too many people who have them yet.)

I have an older Boyue T62+ with a mini-USB port, and when I plug it into my laptop I get a window to open it with Windows Explorer and the device shows in My Computer.

When I plug in the Mimas using the included cable, it charges but it is not recognized by my computer. It doesn't show up at all, and I have tried it many, many times.

I wanted to add my 'fonts' folder and my dictionaries and MP3 folders, APKs etc... but I can't seem to connect.

Is there something I'm missing? With my phone I have to choose 'file transfer' to see the device, but I can't find any option like that with the Boyue. With my T62+, it USB Storage setting just happens automatically.

Please help with any advice you can offer. I have no idea what I'm missing. I feel like an idiot, but I didn't expect to get stuck with such a simple task.

Edited to Add: My laptop ports are USB 3

You are out of luck, thanks to micro$hit.

I just checked with the Huawei mediapad m5 & file explorer "see" device but reports nothing on the device. The tray icon for "safely remove" device had the m5 greyed out; interesting that a line shows up about ejecting my CD drive with is connected as an internal sata drive.

Also tried the ASUS 10 in tablet; the ASUS is not even registered/seen with file explorer or the tray icon.

Needless to say both tablets have usb-c. The connections do not work on either usb 2or usb 3.

Checked for updated usb drivers; none exist tonight. The micro$hit usb developers screwed up again with their usb drivers. The 1st time was I was not able to update my Mars firmware & had to search for newer usb drivers. Running win10 with the "latest" update for this month.

Did not notice before as had a couple drives/partitions as shared so was accessing stuff as in a lan environment using the wifi on the tablets.

Oh crap. I wish I had known that before I ordered it. I just assumed it would work like my previous Boyue model. This is very frustrating.

I never really knew anything about USB C other than reading posts from people complaining anytime a device was released without it. Hasn't it been around a while now?

I use Windows 7 on my laptop. I wonder if they will eventually come out with the appropriate driver? Is there anything else I can do to transfer files? (I guess I could take the micro SD card out of my phone to try using it for file transfers, although I would rather not because I had a problem with it not too long ago and I'd rather not fiddle with it.)

My Mom has a Mac (which I hate using) but maybe I can borrow it. Do most Macs work with USB C? I think her computer is a few years old.

That’s just weird. I might suggest using a service like DropBox or Google Drive to move things onto your Mimas in the meantime. Certainly, this will eventually be addressed, right?

I use the Likebook Note since about half a year which still runs on Android 4.4 but also uses USB C. I am using it only with Linux, so i can't give you any ideas regarding Windows.

The device is recognized as an MTP device and to transfer files it needs to be connected this way. Another option is to use WiFi to transfer files. The Likebook Note offers a local web gui for book transfers and i'd assume that the more recent Mimas offers this possibility as well.

I would very much prefer to use this device's storage via USB instead of MTP, simply because file transfer is much faster than with that awkwardly slow MTP protocol. Too much user friendliness is the opposite of practical usability.

Thank you for your reply. I think I have a Linux distro on a thumb drive somewhere that I never tried... is it likely that Linux would recognize the device when it's plugged into my laptop USB 3.0 port? My laptop is around four or five years old.

I am so frustrated by this. I have already spent hours trying to figure out how to make the Mimas workable. My old Boyue ereader is so simple to just connect to my computer by USB and I can transfer and organize all the files so easily. I never imagined that the new device no longer has all of that functionality. It's exasperating!

I was able to transfer a small amount of books by the wifi book transfer, but it was frustrating because I wanted to just copy my entire book folder with all of the subfolders since I have it all organized how I like it on my old device.

Yesterday I tried transferring APKs and music files that way, but it only accepts book files.

I have to apologize as I did not go further to check on the usb-c connections. Tried again this morning; "same result"; BUT flipped the cover to see if anything happened on my tablets. Saw a popup asking if I wanted to be "charge only" (default) or transfer files or transfer photos.

Selected transfer files & was able to see the stuff on both tablets. However, the tray still had the M5 greyed out & the Asus does not show. Don't know if it affects xfer of data.

One thing I forgot is that with Android 6, we have to get into the developer's option & toggle the usb for the the device's usb port be able to transfer files; I did this with the Mars 'automatically'. Now I wonder if I need to do the same on my M5 & Asus which are on Android 7.1 & Android 8, respectfully. The developer usb setting had "mtp" so the toggle is from mtp to charge & back to mtp.

I'm not sure I understand. To "get into the developer's option" - does the Mimas have to be rooted to access that?

On my Android phone I just select file transfer in the notification area, and with my old Boyue it just happened automatically.

I was thinking of going out and buying another USB-C to USB cable to try, but it's unusually frigid outside here, so if it's not going to work no matter what, I'd rather just stay home.

I got my hopes up after reading this post - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=107

I wonder if it's worthwhile for me to drive over to Best Buy and purchase another cable?

I can't believe how frustrating this is.

Thank you for your help!

If you think its your cable not being okay (possible) then get he pallite one from monoprice don't bother with bestbuy overpriced stuff if your in the states. https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=14925 the 2.0 will be fine to at least test it for cheap. I'v never had an issue with mine. EDIT: Windows should be able to see that device as MTP is standard that it is native. You should only need the drivers to do things like ADB but that should work as well.

Wow, that's very cheap! I've never heard of that store, so thanks for that. I ended up buying one at best buy for $10 - https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insigni...?skuId=5859441 and it works! So I'm very relieved about that.

I wanted to try it out as soon as possible because the ink pen pressure sensitivity is defective on my device, and I am trying to figure out what to do. (I bought it from Germany and I only have seven days to test it out and initiate a return, I think.)

My first full day with the Mimas has been incredibly frustrating, between the defective inking issue and the defective cable that was included. (And various firmware and software issues.)

Anyway... thank you and everyone else who replied in this thread. I really appreciate the advice!

From what i'v seen so far the device definitely has some QC issues going on, hope they sort you out right. I personally never trust cables that came with a china device as they are normally bad in some way or another. Not that they make bad cables but that it's the lowest end of the packaging budget you know.

No need to do "root". Just select the 'android settings', then the 'about device'. At the bottom, you should see 'build number'. Tap 'build number' around 7 or 9 times; if doing it "slowly", a popup will say how many more taps will turn on the developer options; just do it.

Then back out & you should see 'Developer options' listed. Select the 'developer options' & scroll down to item 'select usb configurations' (looks to be the item before the "Input" section.

Tap 'select usb configuration' & select 'charging'; after it is done go back in & select MTP. This is an Android 6 bug. Sometimes I forget to do it after each time updating the CWM firmware to the 'latest' version on the Tab 7 before it was 'archived'.

I've always gotten the "Developer options" on all my tablets as a 'just in case' of need.

Good idea, I also always keep Debugging on for worst case scenario. You can also speed up or just turn off animations which is better on an eink display as well.

I hope that works for you!

I didn't realize I only posted the resolution in the other Likebook Mimas thread --https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=157

I bought a USB C to USB A cable at Best Buy and it worked great. It fit much better (the plugs actually went all the way in) and my Windows 7 PC immediately installed the appropriate drivers.

I wasted so much time trying to find a solution and then a workaround for getting my files on the device before realizing the cable included with the device is defective.
