I use brew upgrade to get the latest calibre 7.17, could this be the reason for such difference? Tried again, and the Barrons recipe fails to fetch, then I use a custom recipe to fetch an issue using command line with success, and the same custom recipe still fails when using calibre "Fetch News" button.

it would still be using mechanize to fetch urls, so its got nothing to do with upgrade. Just don't try fetching it too many times in a short span.

you can try with adding browser_type = qt or webengine as you are on 7.17.
