This usually only happens if the .ePub file is invalid. Have it validated by ePubcheck online.

If epubcheck finds errors that you cannot fix, do an epub to epub conversion with Calibre or try editing it with the Calibre ePub editor.

Is the ePub very large or contains only one large .html file that contains all chapters?
If yes, do an ePub to ePub conversion with Calibre, which will split the .html file into several smaller files.
If not, you'll have to use Calibre's ePub editor, which by now offers most of Sigil's features.

your first post says 'a DOC'

Sigil 'imports' 3 file types files into a book (Add Existing), HTML, EPUB, TXT

AFAIK it only 'Opens' EPUB
(please note that our workflows and feature use can differ and there are features I don't use, so you may be doing it correct)

Yes, 1 large file. I'll check into converting to several files
thanks

If you use the calibre edit book, it will keep track of all the files and is much easier than trying to do it by hand.
