Wallace, Edgar: The Admirable Carfew. V1. 28 December 2012

A very early Wallace book, published by Ward Lock in 1914. It contains 15 short stories about Felix Carfew, an opportunistic young man indeed; and features a guest appearance by T B Smith, an early series detective of Wallace's.

This edition was scanned from a 1919 Ward Lock hardback edition. Original covers are seemingly unobtainable. However, the cover I concocted uses a detail from the Frontispiece in my copy.

From internal evidence, the stories seem to have been written in 1912-1913, a period when electric broughams and horse-drawn carriages were still to be seen, and the hansom cab was giving way to the motor cab. (Although the last London Hansom Cab was only withdrawn from service in 1936!)
