Here is a strange story of love, seduction, and a woman desperate to escape her constrained country life.

The tale opens with the Devil knocking on the door of a lonely country house and requesting a room for the night. At its center is a love story between the rich and dissolute young aristocrat, Sir William Notley, and the beautiful Julia Roseingrave. Whether it be witchcraft (she is very friendly with the local wise woman and herb gatherer, Goody Cloke) or heart-craft and psychological fencing of the highest order is a question the novel leaves fringed with mystery. The plot is driven forward by interlocking romantic triangles that finally resolve into repentant stability for one of these two, and bitter isolation for the other.

Margaret Gabrielle Vere Long (née Campbell; 1 November 1885 – 23 December 1952) was a British author who wrote historical romances, supernatural horror stories, popular history and biography. Her total output numbers over 150 volumes, with the bulk of her work under the pseudonym “Marjorie Bowen”, the name she is mostly known by. She also wrote under the names Joseph Shearing, George R. Preedy, John Winch, Robert Paye and Margaret Campbell.

Bowen’s books are much sought after by aficionados of gothic horror, and received praise from many critics. Several of her novels were adapted for film.
