Cannot download metadata or covers

I can no longer download metadata or covers. Today I downloaded 6 books from Amazon. They converted to epub fine, count pages also worked. When asked to download metadata and covers it tells me:

calibre, version 5.13.0
ERROR: Download failed: Failed to download metadata or cover for the selected book.

Something Strange and Deadly BK 2 Darkness Strange and Lovely (Failed metadata) (Failed cover)

To make sure it wasn't something with the current downloaded books, I performed a download metadata and covers using the bulk feature (I always have more than one book). The metadata and cover had previously been updated, but I used the book to see what would happen. Same error as new books.

Suggestions?

Yeah something on your computer is preventing calibre from accessing the files its needs to in its own library folder. Typical culprits are antivirus or filesync programs like dropbox. Exclude the calibre library folder from such progras and you will be fine.

I still need help with this situation. I have turned off windows fire wall, uninstalled Norton 360 and tried to download the metadata and covers. Still doing the same thing. If I could I would like to use an older version, probably whatever version was available sometime prior to the last 3 updates which is when I think this problem started. This is driving me insane. I don't know anything about the python and other things used for this program. I certainly do not know how to change anything in windows and would not even attempt to do because I am pretty sure I would just cause my laptop to crash. HELP!!!!!!

That error indicates there are SSL certificate problems on your machine. Possibly one or more root certificates have been removed/replaced. I'm not a mac user so I cant help you with how to remedy the situation I am afraid.

Typical culprits are antivirus or filesync programs like dropbox. Exclude the calibre library folder from such progras and you will be fine.

Possibly one or more root certificates have been removed/replaced. I'm not a mac user so I cant help you with how to remedy the situation I am afraid.
