What does "No internet connection" really mean?
calibre 7.16
Python 3.12.4
Linux

I have been unable to download news for a few weeks since some version. It just says "No internet connection" once, any further attempts to download news yield nothing.

Other internetty things in Calibre work fine, such as "Wiki Reader" and "Get books". There don't seem to be any settings for networking. In Miscellaneous it says "No proxies used".

Tried starting in debug mode, nothing is logged about networking.

I have run out of ideas.

Here is your problem:

Uninstall the Debian disto version of calibre and go to calibre Download for Linux download official calibre.

No internet connection will happen when you have network manager installed and it reports that internet is unavailable. Either fix that or go to Preferences->Tweaks and set skip_network_check = True

What is the point of asking network manager? If networking is working, then fetching news will work. If it isn't working, then fetching news won't work. "Get books" seems to work without this feature.
Having said that, my computers are permanently connected to the internet, so maybe there is some aspect that goes wrong with temporary internet connections.
