Converting to Kepub with Calibre doubles the page count.

Hi.

I've got a Kobo Clara HD and I use a Calibre to manage all my Epubs. I convert them in Calibre to Kepub and then transfer them over.

One issue I'm having with some epubs is that the page count on the Clara is wrong. With some books it's doubled for some reason. So, something that is 500 pages shows up incorrectly as 1000 pages.

Any idea what is causing this?

Epubs use the Adobe algorithm for page numbering. Kepubs use 1 screen = 1 page (roughly). And the screen of the Clara is pretty small, so... Plus the number of screens in a book depends on the size of your font, margins and line height. Adobe page numbering doesn't depend on those things.

I have a much smaller difference between epub and kepub page numbering on my 8" Sage, for example. I also use a smallish font size and tight line height.

I have this as well on a Clara Colour, the same book as an epub has 294 pages. As a kepub the book has 551 pages but the book skips pages 2-271 unless I manually use the page slider at the bottom. the skipped pages don't appear to actually be there

The two eBooks use completely different ways to do the page numbering.

RMSDK (for ePub) uses 1024 uncompressed characters equals 1 page. page numbers do not change if you change margins, font, font size, line height, or turn footers on/off. ePub has no issue with page numbers and what's in the NCX ToC.

KePub uses roughly 1 screen equals 1 page. The page numbers do change if you change the margins, font size, font, line height, or turn headers/footers on or off. Now there is an issue with KePub where it will get the page numbers confused if you don't have every HTML file in the NCX ToC. So you have to edit the ePub to make sure every HTML file is in the NCX ToC.

Of the two ways of doing page numbers, ePub is a lot more accurate. It's the best page numbering for eBooks (other then PDF).

In your opinion. Other people have different opinions (personally, I'm not a fan of Adobe page numbers). The only advantage of the Adobe system is that it's consistent across different devices and brands. While I often do read the same book on both my Kobos, having different page numbers (as kepub and epub) doesn't bother me. I have poor memory for numbers and find it easier to find my place by text.

It can be easier to remember the text you last read to search for your place unless you are at the start of a chapter. But to know how many pages you've read, ePub is better because it's consistent. Also, once you get to know ADE page numbers, you get a much better sense of how long the book is.

I use my own system for that - with the help of the Page Count plugin in Calibre. The overall number of pages gets sent to my Kobos and is visible in Subtitle and in Book Details.

I don't like the Adobe numbers because their page count is similar to hardcover editions - which I never read. I want my page count to reflect mass market editions and have customized the plugin accordingly.

Besides, I like to use kepubs on my Sage and so there would not be Adobe numbers there anyway.

I know that the page numbers change if I resize the font etc and then the page numbers shows the pages on screen and not in the actual paper book.

The issue I have is that some kepubs show the first page as halfway through the book and the page number is doubled.

Never seen that issue. It must be a badly formatted book. (I edit all my ebooks before reading them).

I have tried to clean the original epub using “modify epub” plugin in calibre but still get the same result and I have inspected the toc file in a kepub that has the error and one that doesn’t and can’t see why it shows half way through the file

Before converting to KePub, you'll need to edit the eBook in the editor and make sure ALL HTML files are in the NCX ToC in the order they appear in the spine. That is how the KePub knows which HTML files to get page numbers for. Any HTML files missed can cause page numberr oddities.

I have checked the toc files in both an epub and kepub and the html links are always correct and the book does in both formats function correctly. It is the page numbers that are wrong and clicking from the cover to the next page in the book works as intended but the scroll bar of the book jumps to halfway through even though it’s only gone 1 page. The rest of the page turns are correct apart form being out by 100%

I have managed to fix a kepub by converting the original epub to mobi then back to epub before the final kepub conversion. I don’t feel this is the correct way to fix these files though.

Again, did you check the naviagation document (ToC), either the ePUb3 which is an xhtml file or the ePub2 which is a .ncx file to make sure that all the xhtml files are listed in the navigation document. If there are 25 files in the .xhtml files, there must be at least 25 entries in the navigation document.

I have checked both toc files and they are identical and have the correct number of files listed.

The book displays the pages correct and in the right order etc, it is just the page numbers that are off

I thought it was the NCX Toc for ePub2 and ePub3 that KePub uses for page numbers. I've nevr edited the ePub3 Toc. I've always added to the NCX ToC for KePub.
