Interesting people that you meet
I've just been away on a short cruise, and had the pleasure of sharing a dinner table with a very interesting chap called Michael Ford who, it turns out, was the winner of two Oscars for set decoration (for "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Titanic" - look him up on Wikipedia). Had some fascinating discussions about his career and work.
Have you ever met anyone interesting in a similar random encounter? Last edited by HarryT; 09-11-2010 at 03:38 PM. |

I haven't had any particularly interesting random encounters, but I frequently experience that moment during which you realize that someone you *thought* you knew has managed some extraordinary achievement or is blessed with an amazing gift. For example, I recently found out that a friend of mine has a book deal with a major publishing house. Another time, I was visiting a friend and came upon a beautiful painting. The artist? Said friend.
I know it's irrational, but I always feel like there's been some kind of betrayal when that happens. If you're the next Frida Kahlo or some kind of math genius, you can't just keep that information to yourself!!! Sheesh. |

I think it was the summer of 1997, we were in Monte-Carlo for dinner and gambling and met Princess Stephanie (and her bodyguard). A bit wild, but very nice. (OK, a lot wild )
I went shopping the next day and ran into her again. She helped me purchase clothing, and when I told her that I also collected tea pots from around the world, she took me to her cafe and gave me one from her shop. It was a bit unsettling having a "bodyguard" around, but I will admit the conversation was never boring. |

Christmas 2008. I and my best 2/3s had one week holiday in Dominican Republic. On the second day we met a couple from Scotland. We became friends and spent some time together. I was sure that as it is always with holiday friendship it is going to be a short term one. I am very glad to admit I was wrong. We are still friends and have visited each other a couple of times. They are very kind people and intelligent. Whenever we are together I learn a lot. His knowledge of history and politics is outstanding. A fascinating couple and very unusual union, because he is a real Scot with a clan and history, while she is German Also, probably the only real atheists I have ever met in my life.

Frank Zappa, flying from Montreal to Washington on empty flights. Very nice man. Intelligent and kind. Great sense of humor. The hostesses kept bringing up canapés and drinks, happy of his smiles, and by proximity, of mine also. Why not. Told me how many tried to pass for relatives while on tour in Italy. Shared few laughs, few tricks on how to keep straight in a crooked world. Discussed what to do when grown up. Before landing he took out of his valise a pair of ridiculous pink glasses, and put them on for the clownish image. A big grin. Too bad he is gone. I still listen to his music with pleasure.

I met Shaq several times. We went to high school together.
He was a senior when I was a freshman so we didn't hang out or anything. |

Well, as of right now, I am her husband If we start with an assumption that husband and wife are representing one unit, then she is the best 2/3 of it happy_terd made me think about it. I always thought she is my best half but then I realised that I am wrong, although I suspected it all the time |

I met a circus owner on my drivers license exam ( August 2006). He was no more than 25 years old and full of funny stories about transporting dancing (!) elephants with traffic police escort and stuff like that. Really nice guy, and a very good driver too. I wonder if he still runs the same circus...
