Page Change Behavior
I had a chance today to visit a Sony Style store and look at and play with both the PRS-505 and PRS-700 Sony Readers. THis is the first time I have touched an eBook. The one thing that was very obvious on both the 505 and the 700 is that on a page change the display appears to flash to a negative state (black background, white text) then change back to white background and black text for the next page.
I assume this is due to the unique e-ink technology? I have never touched a Kindle, but would I be correct that it behaves the same? I was very impressed by the feel of the Sony devices, very rigid and substantial feel due to the metal body. I have to say I love the concept of the 700 touch screen (I have been spoiled by the iPhone), but the glare and reduced contrast is a pretty big hit. However, Sony has it on sale for $349 at least through the weekend which makes it more attractive. |

All of the e-ink readers suffer from the page change flash.
The 505 has a metal body, the 700 is plastic. Both devices feel very well built. I have not handled a Kindle so can't speak to that. I think the 700 has a permanent price reduction to $349. The 505 can be had for less than $299 if you look around a little bit. |

Most electronic ink ebook devices do the black flash between pages. There is one device that allows you to toggle this on and off, but I can't remember which one it is. The reason for the black flash is to prevent ghosting of text from the previous page, which can make the text harder to see, especially with smaller fonts.
I was able to ignore the flash within the first couple of weeks of owning my 505. Some people can't stand it. Your experience will probably fall somewhere in between. |

Grooks--
The 700 has a metal body as well. My husband has a 700 and I have a 505. Both have metal bodies with plastic on the top and bottom ends. dordale |

Target has the 505 on sale through the end of the week for $279, and the lighted book cover is also on sale for I believe $59
