Bangs, John K.: A Little Book of Christmas. v1. 15 Dec 2018
A Little Book of Christmas by John Kendrick Bangs (1862–1922)
An ideal book for Christmas that will give delight at any season. In a quartet of stories of Christmas Eve in New York, invested with the true Christmas spirit, this noted author shows to rich children and poor children alike a visible Santa Claus who teaches the lesson to young and old that the faithful friend of little children has a veritable existence. There are felicitous touches of humor in the author’s best vein, but it also exhibits other qualities—pathos, tenderness, human kindness, and character-drawing—that will make the readers of “A Little Book of Christmas” wish that he would write more books of the kind. (—Book-jacket blurb from the 1912 first edition.) =============== John Kendrick Bangs (May 27, 1862 – January 21, 1922) was an American author, humorist, satirist, editor and lecturer. Between 1884 and 1906, he worked as editor at a number of magazines, among them Life, the Harper’s magazines, Munsey’s, The New Metropolitan, and the foremost humor magazine of its day, Puck. A prolific writer, he had more than sixty books published. =============== This book was first published in 1912. Text is in the public domain in countries where the copyright term is “Life+90” or less, and in the USA. =============== Text was obtained from the Internet Archive. OCR and printer’s errors were silently corrected; punctuation, diacritics, and italics formatted; hyphenation normalized. Cleaned and enhanced cover image from the 1912 first edition. Illustrations by Arthur E. Becher (1877–1960) were omitted due to copyright restrictions. Story titles are cross-linked to table of contents. Embedded font used for decorations. =============== This to encourage Christmas spirit, and provide some chuckles, too. Check the cover and find a crowd of jolly faces smiling back at you.
