Dickens, Charles: The Pickwick Papers (Illustrated). v7. 31 Dec 2014.
Undoubtedly, the adventures of benevolent Mr Pickwick, sensitive Mr Tupman, literary Mr Snodgrass and sportive Mr Winkle will continue to delight readers of all ages for a couple of hundreds of years more from now. Unlike the rest of Dickens's novels, this book is just the extremely enjoyable story of the four above-named gentlemen who decide to create a club of which Mr Pickwick is the main member. We follow them all around London, into the countryside and even inside a debtors' prison. On their way, they meet several memorable characters, including Mr Jingle, Job Trotter, Messrs Dodson and Fogg and even a couple of ladies two of them fall in love with. The novel has no main plot, resulting in a thoroughly enjoyable story that's read in a light, lively way. Moreover, "Pickwick Papers" is a wonderful insight into Victorian society, written in the way only Dickens can write.
Full illustrated with the original black and white illustrations by Seymour and Phiz. This one was a real pain to do, by the way. It's full of songs, verses, letters, etc, all of which needed extensive re-formatting from the PG original. Took hours and hours to produce. Enjoy! EDIT: 18 Dec 07 Completely recreated the book. Improved the formatting and added illustrations. Uploaded v2. EDIT: 21 Mar 07 Recreated the book to sort out problems with paragraph endings. Improved the layout and formatting. Uploaded v4. EDIT: 11 Dec 08 Thoroughly proofed against several different printed editions. Hundreds of minor corrections made as a result; the book is now in a pretty good state. Uploaded v5. EDIT: 16 Oct 09 Replaced the cover to be consistent with the rest of the MR Dickens series; made internal changes to the HTML code to improve it (these have no visible impact for the reader). Uploaded v6. EDIT: 31 Dec 14 Thoroughly proof-read against the "Oxford Illustrated Dickens" edition. Innumerable errors corrected. General improvements to the formatting, such as replacing straight quotes with curly quotes. I would now regard this as a finished product, so please let me know if you find even the smallest error. Thank you for The Pickwick Papers. Downloaded a version elsewhere and did a comparison: yours is by far the best. Love the preface to the original edition, the hyperlinks to the illustrations. Excellent.

Its a little belated, but thanks Harry. This is another of my all time favorite books and real pleasure to read.
I just downloaded it and looked at it on my laptop. Beautifully produced with nice layout and clean illustrations. Last edited by Stanart; 07-01-2008 at 09:11 PM. |

I've nearly finished my close proof-reading of this book, and will be uploading a new version in the next week. You might want to wait for the new version if you've not yet started reading it. The new version will have hundreds of corrections; nothing vital, but still the overall effect is a lot better.

Ooooh, tempting... I've ignored this one for far too long because the Gutenberg version looked so dreadful, so what is one more week?
