Felix Dahns Spezialgebiete waren eigentlich mehr die Völkerwanderungszeit und das frühe Mittelalter; hier aber hat er sich einmal an einer Erzählung aus dem Hochmittelalter versucht.
Das Werk erschien zuerst 1884 in zwei Bänden mit zusammen 567 Seiten.
Auf dem Cover sieht man einen Ausschnitt aus ›König Konrad in der Schlacht‹, einer Miniatur aus einer französischen Chronik um 1490.
