Nesbit, Edith: The Incomplete Amorist (Illus.). v1. 13 Oct 2015
THE INCOMPLETE AMORIST
by Edith Nesbit 1858–1924) Illustrated by Clarence F. Underwood (1871–1929) First published 1906. The text of this book is in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA. ---------- Edith Nesbit Bland, English author and poet, is best known for her innovative fantasy writing for children. Later in her career she also wrote for adults, publishing several novels and numerous short stories. One of Nesbit’s early novels for adults, “The Incomplete Amorist” takes a different direction from her previous adult short stories, and from her writing for children. Through an unusual series of events, young Betty Desmond finds herself alone in Paris at one corner of a love quartet (much more complex than a triangle!). Superficially a typical romance of the early twentieth century, this exploration of Edwardian-era social conventions and sexual mores shows how manners could control relationships. Contemporary readers may find the soap-opera situations unlikely, and the characters sometimes unlikely and annoying, but the author’s sharp wit provides a brisk breeze to freshen the atmosphere. ---------- Text and illustrations obtained from archive.org. Punctuation, diacritics, and italics have been formatted; some spelling and punctuation modernized/standardized. Chapter heads are cross-linked to in-line Table of Contents. Embedded fonts for titling and small caps. Mid-resolution illustrations. ----------- Something for library of the Nesbit completist. . Thanks again for even more Nesbit. Also forgot to thank you for last week's batch, I'm afraid. So delayed thanks for those too!
