This thread is for direct links to Kobo firmware.

Release dates are taken from the first post of the release thread or from firmware zip file date adjusted for time zones. The release date could be incorrect by a day due to timezone issues.

Versions tagged with a letter are different releases with the same version number, these letters are not official Kobo designators.

You can also grab a copy while the Kobo Desktop is downloading it.

On Windows 7, it downloads the firmware update zip file to :

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition
and it is mirrored in:
C:\Users\<user>\Local Settings\Kobo\Kobo Desktop Edition

This file is deleted when the eReader is finished being updated, so if you want a copy of it, copy the zip file while it is updating the eReader.

In fact, make a few copies while it is being downloaded from Kobo, to ensure that the zip file is completely downloaded.

Installation Instructions for Direct Zip Files

Get a zip file.
Unzip the zip file. This may not be necessary on more modern versions of Windows, as you can access the contents of a zip file without unzipping it.
If going to a previous version, you may want to do a Factory Reset.
If you have any patches installed, you may want to uninstall them. Please refer to any documentation for the patch for more information.
Make sure that the Kobo Desktop is NOT running.
Connect your device to the computer and select Connect on the device (if asked).
Copy the entire contents of the zip file to the .kobo directory on the device. Do not copy the original zip file itself to the device.
Safely remove the device from Windows (or your operating system of choice).
Disconnect the device from your computer.
The device will now install the new software.

The zip file contains the following:

\Upgrade directory and subdirectories - Linux boot and kernel
manifest.md5sum - md5 hashes for the \Upgrade directory
KoboRoot.tgz - this is the firmware

Since this is to support development, I have a couple of pieces of advice on hacking. The instructions here (https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kobo_Touch_Hacking) are excellent.

To make life a lot easier, keep a copy of your personal KoboRoot.tgz to use after the inevitable firmware upgrades. Prior to using your personal KoboRoot.tgz file on a new version of the firmware, confirm the following: that the update's KoboRoot.tgz does not contain /etc/inittab and /etc/inetd.conf. Also do a diff between your modified /etc/init.d/rcS and the official /etc/init.d/rcS to ensure that Kobo has not modified the file.

WARNING about the official version 2.0.0c software as linked to above. This does install correctly (via the technique of copying into the .kobo directory). However upon reboot, the kobo device insists on being configured via the Kobo Desktop software - i.e. AFAICT it is impossible to use the device further until it has been connected to a Windows or Mac computer with Kobo Desktop installed.

I have 2.1.4 (rd43710, 10/1/12) -- seemed best to document it here just in case its the first sign of forking as murg speculated in another thread.

Unit was received direct from Toronto as part of a warranty exchange for a dead Touch and mailed to the USA. Update came via syncing with the desktop software

BWinmill Nameless Being	Since this is to support development, I have a couple of pieces of advice on hacking. The instructions here (https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kobo_Touch_Hacking) are excellent. To make life a lot easier, keep a copy of your personal KoboRoot.tgz to use after the inevitable firmware upgrades. Prior to using your personal KoboRoot.tgz file on a new version of the firmware, confirm the following: that the update's KoboRoot.tgz does not contain /etc/inittab and /etc/inetd.conf. Also do a diff between your modified /etc/init.d/rcS and the official /etc/init.d/rcS to ensure that Kobo has not modified the file.

This does install correctly (via the technique of copying into the .kobo directory). However upon reboot, the kobo device insists on being configured via the Kobo Desktop software - i.e. AFAICT it is impossible to use the device further until it has been connected to a Windows or Mac computer with Kobo Desktop installed.

Unit was received direct from Toronto as part of a warranty exchange for a dead Touch and mailed to the USA. Update came via syncing with the desktop software
