Highlighting/ annotations in articles from Pocket.

I usually make quite a few highlights/annotations in the books I read. Today I was reading an article on my Kobo Glo, saved and downloaded from Pocket. I found something important in the article, and needed to highlight it for future reference and to export it. But I found no option of highlighting or annotation. Only options available are either to search it in wiki/google or to share it on facebook. Is it normal for Kobo for not allowing this feature on articles from Pocket? If yes, is there any hack to enable this option?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, but highlighting and annotations are not supported in Pocket articles. I have no idea why Kobo decided to do this.

It is because they are being downloaded in html format, and the software does not support annotations in html files...
Apart from that, yeah, I really wonder why Kobo wouldn't support that (same goes for PDF btw, the reader software even recognizes annotations embedded in the file (standard PDF annotations) but won't let you make any...
I wrote to Kobo pointing these things out, and of course the are "thankful for the input" and are "considering it"... Maybe more people should start writing to support concerning these things...

It's been a while since I had a straight HTML file on one of my devices. But, I just tested one. Unless there is something unusual in the file I tested, I couldn't select any text, so it is not just this. My guess would be that it is a design decision on Kobo's part as they probably see Pocket articles as only temporarily on the device.

Very different things. The embedded annotations in PDFs are contained inside the file. The firmware is displaying the contents of the file. The annotations you make using the device are external to this. They require supporting selection in the format. Then they are stored in the database on the device, not written to the file.

Thank you very much davidfor and johnnyb for your thoughtful responses. It's a pity that Kobo does not support Pocket articles to hold a permanent space in user's library, despite being officially recommended cloud service for articles.

Hmm, I guess you may be right... I remember reading that somewhere and found it a plausible explanation. Haven't really tested it, thank you for doing so then...

Hmm, but what restricts Kobo from letting the PDF Viewer make annotations to the file directly? As far as I can see, the “annotations view” is perfectly capable of extracting annotations made to the PDF and presenting them in the same way annotations made to epubs (which are then stored in the DB) are presented.
So the question is: What keeps Kobo from not providing annotation tools for PDFs other than the usual “PDF not meant for small screens”, “only small fraction of users would use that” etc., all the while ignoring that users are actually requesting that feature? I mean, if Amazon does it on their Kindles (albeit in a different way, annotations are strictly “to database” in their PDF viewer), why wouldn't Kobo?

Are you saying that the firmware does read the annotations in PDFs and add them to the annotations list, or that you think it should do it? I'm assuming the latter as a test I just did didn't show the annotations in a PDF in any way at all/

The simplest answer to this question is "money". It will take money to add the function to the firmware, to test it and maintain it.

There is also an issue of the libraries they use. For PDF, Kobo uses Adobe RMSDK. If that doesn't support the annotations, then Kobo can't.

But, it probably comes down to how Kobo sees the product. If PDF annotations, be they internal or external, is not something they see is important to the direction of the product, then they won't see an importance to add it. And that's also where the small fraction of users" comes into play. If they add function that only a “only small fraction of users would use", they are ignoring the function that the rest of us would use. They have to set their priorities somehow and this is a reasonable way of doing it.

As a comment, this is the first time I can remember someone suggesting that the annotations in PDFs should be extracted into annotations list. Writing annotations back to the file (usually referring to epubs) has been suggested but only as a side-affect of asking where they are.

Note: I hope the above is how the priorities are set, or at least an important part of it. But, it is a lot more likely that some idiot in marketing had an idea, convinced their boss that it was a good idea and sell a lot more devices, and then they pushed it down everyone else's throats. So, if you want something done, you just need to find that marketing idiot, buy them a few drinks and ...

In that case I need a PDF file with the annotations. When I tried adding annotations using the version of Reader at home, they weren't added to the file. They were displayed when I reopened the file, but it hadn't changed size or timestamp, so I don't know where they actually are. When I tried using the version on my work machine, they were. That's the file I tested earlier, and there is no sign of a annotation on the device.

So, if you have a PDF with annotations that works, I'd be interested in trying it.

For some reason the link doesn't work. I sent the pdf to David in pm since I just wanted to help out giving him an example of a pdf with annotations (it wasn't me having the problem/question, I have since long given up on using pdfs on e-readers...).

This option is available in all Pocket apps (Android, IOS etc.) except in the Kobo version.

I did. Same answer. But after all these years it is just the same old Pocket version making it impossible to use Pocket articles for research. An inexplicable omission.
