Welcome to our 10th Annual Reading Challenge!

The Annual Reading Challenge is neither a race, contest, nor an “exclusive club”, anyone can join! This is just a fun activity that some of us have enjoyed doing in the past. Many of us have found reading challenges to be an entertaining way to set goals for ourselves, get ideas for books, and see what others are reading.

This thread is for you to keep a running tally for your chosen challenge. Please state your goals at the top of your post (in the title line if you can), and then start your list in the body of your post. As you read books, edit your post to update your list of books read, or other challenge status.

My goal is to buy fewer books than I read. And so end up with fewer unread books.

I start 2019 with 1014 books on my TBR pile.
Well, an adjusted 1018 thanks to expanding omnibuses

   Not one of the best. Several stories I thought were a bit weak.

   An enjoyable 1936 period romance. One star off for getting the weather wrong.

   Perhaps it was me, but not quite as fun as usual.
4. January 10th: The Sister Paradox by Jack Campbell - £0.99 - 3/5 - 150pp
   OK, but too much of a YA for me, with unrealistic character development.

   Excellent as usual, and a complete story arc, even though in a series.

   Very good fantasy and SF as usual.

   A slow start, but it delivers in the end.

   Great fun. I've added his other books to my watch list.

   Wrapped up a little too quickly, but fun.

    An excellent 12th century mystery.

    Another excellent regency romance.

    Wonderful detective story. Absolutely excellent.

    Good smaller story in the PC Grant universe.

    Nicely sliding into the gaps in history.

    An excellent side story.

    Good new stories and excellent reprints.

    An odd mixture of old and new that don't quite gel. Not as good as the early books, especially with the call backs to previous similar stories.

    Good, but still has a way to go to be great. Not quite to Morse we know yet.

    An amusing YA fantasy

    Dull for those who agree with him, and won't convince others. Abandoned.
34. April 4th: Krondor: Tear of the Gods by Raymond E. Feist - £4.04 - 5/5 - 261pp
    Splendid fantasy fun. Seeing how characters first met.
35. April 5th: the Spend Game by Jonathan Gash - £0.99 - 4/5 - 197pp
    Lovejoy being Lovejoy - violent and self-deceiving.
36. April 7th: The Hunt for the Red Cardinal by Bradley Sinor - £1.59 - 2/5 - 274pp
    Not up to the standard of most of the other Ring of Fire books. Poor plotting, poor characters, poor story pacing. A shame.

    Splendid. Although the murder mystery is the least part of the story.

    A very pleasant surprise. A most enjoyable racing-related thriller.

    Fun stuff, but even for a children's book, it underplays the consequences of events.

    A nice mystery inserted into Agatha Christie's life.

    OK, but just an average readable fantasy world with no real world-building of its own

    Still fun, although I found one story had an ending that was too good to be true. And the issues seem to be getting shorter, which is bad since they're one of my most expensive purchases.

    Very good, but not compelling, and a bit depressing.

    Brilliant, as expected

    Getting unnecessarily messianic
73. July 27th: Monster Hunter Memoirs: Sinners by John Ringo and Larry Correia - £3.87 - 4/5 - 262pp
    OK, but a bit repetitive. I suspect the trilogy would have been better as a single novel.

    Pretty good. But there were one or two that were just OK.
75. August 5th: The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie - £0.99 - 4/5 - 231pp
    I love the universe. I understand why it's written the way it is. But making the reader appear to be one of the characters in the story just didn't really work for me. I didn't like being constantly told what I did in the story.
76. August 8th: Monster Hunter Memoirs: Saints by John Ringo and Larry Correia - £3.00 - 4/5 - 262pp
    Not a bad conclusion, but the ending felt a bit rushed.

    Another excellent mystery set in post-war Brighton

    Fun in 1630s Russia. Nice advances of main plot points.

    The usual fun in early 20th century Egypt.

    Excellent mystery with Max and Edgar

    Excellent historical fiction with our fictional hero of the days of King Alfred.

     Decent enough Mil SF.

     The usual Paddington mishaps, only occasionally cringe-worthy.

     A most enjoyable finish to the series. Highly recommended.

     Splendid while being read, but afterwards all the innumerable plot holes and unexamined possibilities start to occur. SF by a non SF writer?

     Excellent 'short' (for Sanderson) stories in his various series. I haven't quite finished, as I need to read "The Way of Kings" and "Words of Radiance" to avoid spoliers.

     Excellent, but very, very long. All fascinating, but so long.

I've made a major change in my goals. Fortunately, a topic tugged at me in time for me to shift. Six books in ancient history, six books in German history from 1918 - 1945, with ancillary books I'll also track. I'll read two of the colossal novels that have lingered on my TBR for years. And I'll get my Goodreads Want-to-Read list down to 25 titles. My hope is that limited goals can be achieved and still leave me room to follow my bent as it bends.

I set a benchmark for total books each year of 120. I don't consider it a goal.

I've made a Reading Challenge 2019 page on my blog.

The goal this year is similar to last year's, 120 books read (or abandoned), with a stretch goal of 160 books. This includes audio books. Individual short stories will be recorded, but not counted towards that goal until I've got several I can combine. Longer "short" works (~100 pages or so) will be counted as a full book, though if I have two of them back to back, I'll tend to count them as a single book.

Secondary goal is to update this list no less often than once a week. I managed that until the summer last year, but then that completely fell apart for a bit, before I got it back on track. It's really easy to lose track or get so far behind that one abandons the attempt. One trick is to update my "Reason for Editing" each time to show the last book(s) purchased and recorded. This helps me keep track even if it's been a few days since the last edit.

This year, a new tertiary goal -- to read at least 10 of the 12 books in the New Leaf Book Club and actively participate in the discussion.

2. The '86 Fix, Keith A. Pearson - 5/10 - time travel comedy. Writing was flat, not my sense of humour and ends on a set up for book 2. I hate that.
3. The Left Hand of Darkness, Ursula K. LeGuin - 5/10 - found it a slog. Too much made up language and endless descriptions of snow and ice.
4. Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata (tr. Ginny Tapley Takemori) - 7/10 - Novella about unconventional woman trying to conform. Fascinating.

This year I want to read 75 books, including 5 non-fiction titles and 3 or more from outside my usual preferences. Try things I normally would avoid, like sports or politics or trashy M/F romances. I'd also like to finish off a series from my huge TBR pile, then some poetry or comics. Been ages since I've read those.

And finally, I really need to read more Lesbian novels. Because as much as I love M/M, especially paranormal mysteries, a steady diet makes me wonder if I've been letting down the side.
