Is this normal?

I have had my H20 for about a week now and so far its great. The only thing that bugs me is that after using calibre to load on books it takes forever to finish "PROCESSING CONTENT" I added about 150 books the other day and it took almost an hour for it to finish processing. On my Sony as soon as I un-pluged it from my pc it was good to go.

Is this a normal thing for the kobo's or have I somehow gotten a faulty reader?

Thanks In Advance

Yes, that's normal. Kobo uses a database to hold the information about the books on the device, and it scans the new books to update that database. One or two books take seconds, but 150 may take a while.

I haven't added a large number of books for several software versions but 40 seconds per book sounds a little high. It does take minutes rather than seconds and I'd be surprised if it had taken much less than 10 minutes.

Possibly there's a badly formatted book in the batch? I've added up to 400 books at once when I first got my spare Glo and it didn't take near that long, maybe 20 minutes top.

I had it take several hours when adding hundreds of books. I think that what the OP is seeing is normal.

The good news is that once you've got the bulk of your books on there, adding one or two new ones should only take a couple of minutes to do the "Processing Content" operation.

I've disabled seeing all avatars as I find some to be, as you say, annoying.

Sounds normal.

You should not only look at the number of books but also the total megabytes you sideloaded. You could have 150 books at 300Kb each (45Mb total) or you could have 150 books at 10Mb each (1.5 Gb total) .. there's a BIG difference there. Were they all pdf books or epub books, did they have a lot graphics in the books, that would be another reason for increasing the processing time.

You can't compare it to your Sony, they load books differently.

So without giving more information about the type of books you sideloaded it sounds normal.

I use Adblock Edge to block out specific avatars that I find annoying.

As to the OP's issue, yes, it's normal. One thing that might help is if the H2O is doing some sort of power saving mode while processing all of thes eBook while on battery. Next time a large amount of eBooks is loaded in one go, try plugging it into a wall socket based USB port and see if it goes any faster.

Regarding animated avatars (and other animated gifs), I have a firefox extension--SuperStop 0.1 installed. When I hit "Shift+Esc", the animation stops until I reload the page. I also use Adblock Plus, which blocks most ads and can be used to block specific avatars if I find them truly annoying or offensive.

I have over 5022 books on my device and it does take, quite some time to process the books. I keep all my books on an sd card and back the data base up regularly... with several previous backups to ensure a good copy of the data base. When I first got a Kobo, it was quick and fast for a few books but as I my calibre grew to thousands of books reinstalling the books from the card took hours to complete... by hours I mean over 8+. It may be faster if you keep it in the main memory of the device but if you do a master reset you will loose all the books from the card. Also as some have stated here a bad formed epub can cause hours of grief and is usually the hardest to track down!

just add a few books at a time and eventually you will get there.

regardless enjoy the reader

The processing time increases quite drastically with first 3.0.0 firmware revision. Since then it has dropped but still taking much longer than my original Touch firmware did. Another possibility is that an epub that has errors (it'll fail either epubcheck or Flightcrew) can hang the entire processing procedure.

Since I normally have more than 2400 ebooks on my ereaders, the procedure I follow before a factory reset is to remove the external uSD card, do the factory reset, updates and patches, re-install the external uSD card and leave the ereader plugged into a power supply while it processes overnight. Next morning, update the series information and I'm ready to read.

Thanks for the info everyone. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a faulty device. All books are epub and range from a couple hundred kb to about 1.5mb. I did notice when I was playing around with collections and only adding a few at a time that it didn't take as long to load them all.

And to those who dont like my avatar....

If it annoys you that much then dont look at it or block it like others have said. In every post I have made on this forum over the last few weeks more replies have been about it that the question I have asked. I'm not changing it and I'm sick of hearing about it and its getting ridiculous.

Just a bit of advice. If enough people find your avatar annoying enough to comment on it, then when you do post, people will start to ignore you and won't help answer your questions. You have a choice. You can keep your annoying avatar or you can be ignored. Your choice.
