A terrific list, Bookratt. Many thanks. My own wee publishing house's site is down for reconstruction this week (of all weeks!), so we're joining in this year through Smashwords. The offer's in my sig line below. Cheers. Neil

So far, looks like a short manual and several short stories, some geared towards kids. No novels this year from these three. (which are all related).

I was writing an article on Read an E-Book Week, so I joined and downloaded stuff from all sorts of e-book sites to compare the experience. Plumbing manual aside, it was great because I got to sign up for several sites I had meant to join. |

Perhaps they thought we all needed one, what with the economy forcing people to do their own repairs?

I've noticed, too, that many so-called freebies come with strings attached or are a blatant come-on. You can easily be put off. Don't be, many offers out there are absolutely genuine. But, generous as they might be, they are not entirely altruistic.
An MR member PMd me yesterday to say that when a good book was on offer freely or cheaply, she wouldn't go for it because it would impact the author's royalties. I was touched by that sentiment, but explained to her the value to authors and serious publishers of offers to expose and promote work. And I further explained that authors and publishers joining in Read an Ebook Week were also promoting ereading in general to everyone's mutual advantage. She said she understood and downloaded four of our BeWrite ebooks. Know what, though? She voluntarily paid half normal price for each of them when I'd just told her the advantages to authors and publishers of actually giving books away sometimes. And I happen to know this lovely lass had already given generously to Haiti, so her intent could only have been to encourage authors. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm a big tough Scotsman, that would really have brought a tear to my eye. In fact ... Cheers. Neil |

David - I want to thank you (and all the other publishers and authors) for participating, whether each book is to my taste or not (for example, I skip school curriculum and kids books and never could figure out the running/cycling bookstore, as I can't see any changes day-to-day, nor do most of the free titles interest me).
I do wish Dorrance would tell you what the book is first, but they didn't last year, either. Some are good, some are so-so (and some are kid's books that I would not have bothered with). Their registration screen is the same as last year and seems the same as they use for sending out print book (thus, all the extra junk it asks for). I haven't noticed any extra book related junk mail in the mailbox, though, physical or e, so I don't worry about giving them the info. I do wish some of the sites were easier to locate their "free" offers. For a few, I'm not entirely sure there even is one, at least, not one specific to this promotion and other than the usual PD freebies they always have. |

I'll second that one! I spent some useful time on Smashwords and downloaded several (ahem!) very interesting titles...they are definitely the exception. Thanks Smashwords! Has anyone managed to find the Books on Board offering though? The link on their homepage just takes you back to the ebookweek.com site - sort of circular reporting LOL! |

I find it very odd that the main places linked on the site are difficult to navigate. I was told to be listed there I had to A: prominently display one of the banners with a link back to the Read and eBOOK Week site - which I did - and to provide a free, or deeply discounted e-Book "AND A LINK" - and I just assumed that the link in question should lead directly to whatever was free...
Hmmm Anyway, that's how mine works. |

I am a member of Books on Board but did not find any way to "get" a free download. I spent a good 15 minutes clicking away to no end. Have found the same problems others have mentioned above.... too many strings attached.... except for Smashwords.....which I will check out today... |
