Kindle Firmware 5.16.10

My Scribe got OTA updated to firmware 5.16.10 this morning.

Version 5.16.10 - July 2024

Here's what's new:

Your Lists update: Your Reading Lists is now Your Lists. Your Lists now shows your saved books from your Amazon lists. To find your samples, use the Samples filter in your Library.

Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.

It is weird that it came through so fast. Device Info confirms it's 5.16.10 (4258080021), but the section mentioned in the What's New is still Your Reading Lists. It's odd that it seems to be a feature that is remotely activated, not just baked into the firmware, but I guess reading from Amazon lists needs server-side support.

Just noting it was not Your Reading Lists before the update, but From Your Lists.

So far everything looks exactly the same after the update.

I took a quick look at the 5.16.10.0.1 firmware and found a few undocumented changes.

• New annotation types: asterisk, circle, and underline.
• Optional automatic updating of GoodReads (auto-shelving) upon book completion.
• Transition to a new method of handling annotations with them being stored in both the old way and the new way temporarily.
• Internal changes related to inter-process communication.

Many changes need to be enabled remotely be Amazon so the new features may not be made available for some time, possibly never.

Presumably the new annotation (highlighting) types would be rolled out to the Kindle apps as well. They might even show up there first.

I suppose they have been getting feedback about people wanting to underline and circle things with reflowable content on Scribe. This would let you do it on any (updated) Kindle or Kindle app. Nice. How about strikethrough as well (for document review etc.).

I would like to have handwritten notes (so called 'sticky' notes) for print replica on Scribe for more 'symmetry' with reflowable format, ability to view with Kindle apps, etc.

Almost every sideloaded book of mine (through sendtokindle) have their "time left in chapter" missing. It's greyed out.
I've also seen posts from reddit experiencing this after the update. Some say the same thing happened to their books loaded via USB.

I remember my Kindle going to sleep mode after some time, but instead of showing me the cover it restarted itself. Then an error message popped up after the restart. I forgot what it said. But it's something along the lines of "failed to launch application" or something. It was just a blank white screen for a while. After the homescreen loaded, that's when I noticed the "time left in chapter" stopped working.

The error message says:

Application Error
The selected application could not be started.
Please try again.


I'm getting that error message now every time I restart the Kindle. I'm also getting that long white screen after a restart, then the error message will pop up.
