catalog - full use of any column, custom or othewise doesn't work

Hi,

since 2.1 when you generate a catalog in EPUB or MOBI it says on the website that it allows using the full template language including all custom columns

How do I have to use this feature?

I added this in my xhtml-file:

for a custom column I have put a #in front of the name.

csv is not an option. It is easier for me to change the look with html and css. I only need the way how to adress the column-names I want into my html file.

with csv i have problems getting the cover, links for the genres and so on...

can someone help me here?

I use calibre 2.12 on OSX 10.9.5
