O'Brien, Fitz-James: Strange Company (collected weird fiction). v1. 18 Dec 2020

Strange Company collection by Fitz-James O’Brien (1828–1862)

Presented here, fantastical stories of quirky imagination, telling of dreams and nightmares and extraordinary events. O’Brien relates tales of the macabre and the surreal, and these are often darkly disturbing; but you will also find whimsy and humor and even an occasional light touch of romance.

Note: The final three stories are non-genre.

Fitz-James O’Brien (25 October 1826 – 6 April 1862) was an Irish American Civil War soldier, writer, and poet often cited as an early writer of science fiction. He emigrated to the United States in 1852 and set out to be a writer, with some success, contributing numerous poems and short stories to many periodicals, until his untimely death after being wounded in the Civil War.

His work was influential not only on subsequent fantastical and speculative fiction but also on the development of the short story. His best-known works are “The Diamond Lens,” “The Wondersmith,” and “What Was It?”
