Cybook Opus?
I see one of the few online shops that sell eBooks to us here in South Africa is offering the Cybook Opus on pre-order. The Cybook Gen 3 seems to be unavailable, and the only other alternative is the Bebook.
The Opus looks like an interesting device and I'm wondering if it would be worth it getting the Opus instead of the Gen 3. Anyone seen the Opus in real life? I know the Paris meetup will get a chance, so hopefully they can post some comments. |

I certainly am! I've been checking mobileread and retailer websites for the past two months now. I'll be ordering one as soon as a Dutch retailer has them available.
I really, really hope they'll ship them next week. But who knows what they said at the French meetup... |

The first impressions on the Opus are discussed (in English) on the meetup thread on the French forum:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50232 I thought it was very nice, very small and a nice shape. I was afraid the screen would be too small but it's actually only slightly less wide than the cybook's (and somewhat less high), so the length of a reading line is still good. It also supports automatic switching from portrait to landscape mode. It does not support mobi, but epub (and html and txt and pdf? not sure about that). |

Thanks. I would never have thought to check in the French forums since my French is limited to 3 words!
It does sound encouraging, although I don't know about the ePub format. I already have quite a few .prc files. Wonder if it would be easy to convert them into ePub format. |

Bear in mind, though, that the Opus does not have dictionary support, since it does not support MobiPocket. That, to me, is a very major "backwards step".

The Opus looks like the cheapest option (US$380) when converted from my local currency. And hopefully it offers slightly newer or streamlined technology. |

If the 512MB version becomes available when the new stock arrives that will be a huge bonus and will make my choice between the Gen3 and Opus much more difficult. |

Must be a shop with very old stock - the 512MB Gen3 replaced the 64MB version in about May 2008.
I really would not buy the 64MB version. Not only does the 512MB version have 8x as much storage space, but it also has a much better-designed navigation control; the control on the 64MB model was very stiff to operate. |
