EBook uploads exceed 30,000
Today the eBook uploads in the Patricia Clark Memorial Library reached 30,008 eBooks. There are:
8670 Mobi/Kindle eBooks 8570 LRF Sony eBooks 8431 ePub eBooks 3488 IMP eBookwise eBooks 0849 Misc formats eBooks Of these numbers the German language exceeds all languages except English. There are approximately: 2100 ePub eBooks 0590 LRF eBooks 0793 Mobi eBooks 0241 IMP eBooks 0127 Misc format References to these are in our wiki Free eBooks-de/de Our most frequent uploader is crutledge with 12906 uploads mostly equally divided between ePub, LRF, Mobi plus a few IMP eBooks. We are in the process of revising the uploads to conform to the Swiss copyright rules. This means removing a few books that are out of copyright only in the US and adding a few where the author died before 1944. Congratulations to all of the eBook uploaders. Makes you wonder how many of the PD books at Gutenberg are still unfixed here at MR.

As of today the ePub uploads have finally exceeded the LRF uploads. The MOBI uploads are still more that 100 ahead. Of course if you count only English language the ePub are still way behind. We are nearing 31,000.

Today the eBook upload section was scrubbed to make everything 70yrs+death copyright compliant. Here are the new starting point numbers for uploads. We have been enforcing this for a while on new uploads so most of the removed books have been on the site for quite a while. They are retained in an offline area and will be restored in January of each year when they become compliant.
Total 24131 Kindle 6910 BBeB 6661 ePub 7266 IMP 2631 MISC 663 More than 3800 of the total books are in German Dale Last edited by DaleDe; 11-22-2014 at 01:14 PM. |

On the 17th of March we reached a milestone of 25,000 eBooks (Today there are 67 more). This does not include the boost we will get once the new books are available due to the year rollover in January. They will appear soon.

Thanks for the revised update, Dale. It's a shame we had to get rid of some books to meet the new guidelines, even if only temporary.

On November 9, 2015 we reached 26,000 eBooks in the MobileRead library. This statistic is based on the new 70 years after death of the author criteria for public domain. The boost for 2015 never happened but hopefully we will get that boost and the 2016 boost next January. The breakdown by format is:
Kindle formats: 7471 Sony formats: 7122 EPub formats: 8142 IMP formats: 2604 Misc formats: 663 Note that we will be changing the library arrangement in the future to a system based on Calibre so the breakout by format may go away. Dale |

I am curious --- is there a way to learn how many individual TITLES are available?

It's not even easy to define what is meant with that. The "same" book could have been uploaded in different formats with slightly different thread titles (different dates, typos, different uploaders). The "same" book could be uploaded by the same uploader in different versions (illustrated, dropcaps, etc.). Several books can be uploaded in a single thread (all X novels, in separate files). A single book can be uploaded in several threads (part 1, 2...).
But our current working database (which is several months outdated by now) has more than 11000 entries (plus the "offline" books, whose number I don't remember). |

I am curious, what is the reason for compiling free ebooks on MR? I mean, they are likely also available a lot of other places.

The text is usually available in many other places, but the formatting here is (or should be) much better than what you get with automatic conversions. Often our books are also additionally proofread, include illustrations, etc.
To quote from our General Book Uploads Posting Guidelines: 6. Uploads here should add some notable "value" to a PG (or whatever) original (for example: nice reformatting, artwork, a TOC, footnotes, etc etc). There's really no point in posting here something which which a poster can get from the original source in two minutes. |

There are loads of books here that otherwise only exist as Google scans. Have you ever tried reading one of the automatic epub conversions the Internet Archive offers of those? Some people even scan books themselves. I know that there is material in pynch's Virginia Woolf and James Joyce editions that is unavailable in digital form anywhere else. |

Today the Patricia Clark Memorial Library E-Book Uploads reached 30,001 passing the 30,000 milestone only 4.5 years since the last time based on the change in Public Domain rules. It should get a fairly good increase again after the year end when more books become available. But for now here is what we have:
* Kindle Format: 8811 books * Sony Format: 7738 books * ePub Format: 9908 books * eBookwise: 2840 books * Misc Format: 704 books mostly PDF In German there are more than 4100 books. 4182 are available in links from our wiki. These are mostly ePub. See Talk:Free eBooks-de/de. Thank you to all those who continue to upload eBooks to our collection. |
