are there any good text to basic html programs?

dont mind if its free or not.

i have tried q-html, and im sure its perfect, but i continually get a runtime error when trying it. (and yes i installed the full installable exe file, not the bare bones one)

the reason i need it is because i exploded a lit book and it turns out the html tage in the document are pretty much nonexistant, meaning when its in mobi form there are no paragraphs or page break or anything.

so i have deleted all the html tags and have the text file looking nice. basically the structure and formatting is great and if there is a program that can convert this to html code, therefore making it easy to retain the structure when building it into a mobi.

hope you guys can help.

Just a thought, but you could use BookDesigner to edit it how you want and export as a PRC or (what I would do) open it in Sigil and do all your formatting save as ePub and then convert in Calibre. If you put your chapter breaks and stuff in using one of these programs Calibre will honor them.

If you decide to use Book Designer (a great program IMO), I suggest you have a look at my HTML02HTML utility (see my signature for the thread). This utility generates a clean HTML file from an uncompressed HTML0 file.

You could try OpenOffice.org. It allows you to choose the type of HTML that you want, and one of the options is HTML 3.2.

Have you tried simply renaming it from .html to .txt?

I had an issue with Calibre, which I fixed by doing a simple search and replace in notepad2, I exchanged every line return with a new paragraph code, and then renamed from .txt to .html.

Worked a treat!

HTML files are simply text files with HTML codes in them, notepad2 is a very nice way to edit simple ones.

I tried OpenOffice on a scan conversion, and it was a disaster. I had great success with the WYSIWYG HTML composer in SeaMonkey (from Mozilla.org)

Google for Markdown. It's free and does a good job.

If you're on a machine with a good text editor, just add a header, and a footer. Sort of like this.
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">
<html>
<head>
<title></title>
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
</head>
<body>
<p>

...

</p>
</body>
</html>

Then add at any paragraph breaks: </p><p>.

Congratulations, you just produced an html file. Save it with the extension .htm or .html.

Regards,

You don't need the header and footers, just the paragraph breaks - or at least I didn't when I was putting them in a .txt, renaming to .html and putting them through Calibre.

That's not guaranteed to work everywhere. Calibre is probably, by design, pretty forgiving of badly made files. Pasting on a simple header and footer means you don't need Calibre or anything else. I don't think I own a digital device that can't read html. Well, maybe some of my kitchen appliances, and a few of the older clocks.
