Pain, Barry: The Exiles of Faloo. v1. 28 Nov 2022
A comic picture of a South Sea island where a body of genteel swindlers and other fugitives from London society have settled and established a club; the satire particularly neat and unobtrusive, the characters adroitly combined so as to bring out each other's foibles. (—Adelham, Internet Archive review) … this is a satire on colonialism. And it’s the best thing of Pain’s that I’ve read, a genuine lost masterpiece. There’s a romantic subplot, there are good action sequences with an insurrection against the Club, and there’s a subtle political satire that has aged remarkably well. (—Alwyn Turner, Lion & Unicorn blog) ============== Barry Eric Odell Pain (28 Sep. 1864 – 05 May 1928) was an English journalist, poet, humorist and writer. During his lifetime, he was perhaps best known as a writer of parody and lightly humorous stories, but now is also noted for his tales touched with fantasy, horror, and the supernatural. He also wrote stories of mystery and suspense. His humor has been characterized by some modern critics as “a surreal forerunner to Monty Python.” ============= The Exiles of Faloo, first published in 1910, is in the public domain where copyright is “Life+90” or less, and in the USA. .
