Table of Contents Missing Sort of
I bought Wired by Douglas E. Richards through Amazon. The Kindle for Mac app shows the table of contents no problem as well as my Kindle Paperwhite. The Kindle for IOS app says the TOC is not available for this title. When I import into Calibre, Calibre does not see a TOC (mobi) and after conversion to epub Calibre does not see a TOC. I added the epub to Adobe Digital Editions just as a double check and no TOC. So, does the original mobi file just have some bad formatting and the Mac and Paperwhite kindle app compensating but the IOS app isn’t? How would I go about fixing this so my Calibre files have a TOC?
Thanks. |

I'm guessing it's simply an oversight of the ebook creation process for that particular title. The Kindle for Mac app version of the book (where you mention the ToC does work) is capable of reading Amazon's latest KF8 format—so that's what it downloads if it's available. The Kindle for iOS app doesn't yet deal with the newer KF8 format and so it downloads the regular old MOBI format. Apparently, the MOBI-only format of that book has no NCX ToC or inline HTML ToC to display.
The easiest way to ensure your calibre files have a ToC is to start with one of the KF8 versions (AZW3; and DRM-free of course) that has a working ToC to begin with. Last edited by DiapDealer; 01-13-2013 at 09:17 AM. |

Here is some more information. Here is a file listing of the book on my file system before importing into Calibre.

Open the NCX with a text editor. If it's empty or has nothing other than a "start" entry, then it's as I've said... the mobi version simply had no ToC included. A creation oversight/decision. Don't use that version of the book to store in calibre. Use the other Kindle for Mac version that does have a working ToC. Different apps/devices get different versions of an ebook depending on their capabilities.

That version seems to have a working ToC. Perhaps I'm not understanding the question, but I would say you should use that version to store in calibre/convert to epub, etc.

Sorry, I'm not quite following. I think you may be confusing the inline (html) ToC (used by the Go to Toc feature of the Kindle apps) with structural ToC (ncx) used by the Paperwhite and calibre viewer. Add to the fact that you're posting info about two (likely) structurally different versions of the ebook--the iOS mobi version and the Mac/Paperwhite KF8 version.

I contacted Kindle Support and they indicated there is an issue with the book Wired by Douglass E Richards. They will be contacting the publisher to get an updated version of the book. I did get a $2 credit out of the free book at the time I bought it. In summary the error I receive in Kindle for IOS and Kindle Web Reader is “Table of Contents (not available for this title)."
