Epub coming to the Sony Store on 11 December
Sony just announced a definite date for the Epub switchover. The announcement also mentioned that the Sony Ebook Store will be renamed to the Reader Store, with a new site address: http://readerstore.sony.com.
Next week will also bring an update to the Sony Library software. v3.1 will add support for Windows 7 and Mac OSX 10.6. As of 11 December, LRX files will no longer be offered for download. The only files available will be DRMed Epub. If you're one of the PRS-500 who hasn't upgraded to the Epub firmware, back up your ebooks before it's too late. Thanks to Anemic Oak for also reporting this! Last edited by NatCh; 12-11-2009 at 03:46 PM. Reason: adding attribution |

I am of two minds on this: I applaud Sony's adoption of the open, albeit DRMd, ePub format, but I hope they will get fixed the "full justification" issue. It is only a slight annoyance, but an annoyance none the less.
- oh, and the page number in the right margin issue. Make that of three minds... |

http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield...h=Submit+Query and it turns out Sony has three trademarks on the word 'Reader', two in the hardware reading devices category and one in the software reading applications and 'online retail store services featuring electronic books and electronic book reading device' categories. The joys of being a big corporation with lawyers... http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield...4010:6i964.7.1 http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield...4010:6i964.7.2 http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield...4010:6i964.7.3 Btw, that last TM is going to be published for opposition starting tomorrow, so Amazon, B&N and others have 30 days from tomorrow to file an opposition if they think it's worth their time! =X= , it is my understandng that ePub is an open format which can (and often does) contain a DRM layer on top of it.
But this may be techno semantics, depending on your perspective. Quote:

Um, the real question is, is this version of ePub the version that has already been cracked? I have a friend with a Sony Reader I'd like to lend a couple of books to.

It has to be. They can't update the DRM until they update the Adobe DE software. Thay haven't done it yet.

The question is: will this work with your current Adobe ID or will you have to register a new one? If the latter, can you download your books using Adobe DE or must you use Sony Ebook Library? If you must use SEL, then the current scripts won't work because they won't generate adept key from e SEL. Will the Sony software work with non-Sony readers? If not, what is the point of changing the DRM? LRF, IMO, looks better, so it would actually be a decrease in quality for no gain.
