Tips for the Kindle 4 NT (non-touch)
Tips for the Kindle 4 NT (non-touch)
How to set Page Refresh to every page: Note: This requires FW 4.0.1 or later. From the Home screen, select Settings in the Menu. In Settings, scroll to page 3 of 3 and you will see the Page Refresh option. The screen reads Refresh the E Ink display with every page turn. Click turn on to activate or turn off to deactivate. --------------------------------------- How to use Picture Viewer: This works like the K3. Create your pictures. Place the pictures in a compressed ZIP file. Copy the compressed ZIP file to the K4's documents folder. The compressed ZIP file now displays as a book by the same name but when opened displays your pictures. Pictures need to be smaller than 600 x 800 pixels though. I tested with 520 x 640 and that size worked well. EDIT: If you Enable Full Screen Mode then 600 x 800 pixel images will work. It is a bit flaky, but if you page through a few images it seems to clear up any issues and then displays them okay. --------------------------------------- How to import Collections from Kindle for PC (K4PC): Creating Collections directly on the K4 NT is possible, but many will find it tedious without a physical keyboard. A good alternative is to use the latest version of Kindle for PC and create your Collections with it. The computer interface is much easier to work with than any of the Kindles. Once you have your Collections within Kindle for PC, import them into your Kindle as follows. On your K4, download and/or side-load all the eBooks you will place into Collections. Go to the Home screen on your K4. Scroll down to and select Archived Items. In the Archived Items screen select Add Other Device Collections. A list of eligible devices from which to import Collections is displayed. Select the device corresponding to your Kindle for PC. All the Collections from Kindle for PC will be created (imported) on your K4 and all the eBooks associated with each Collection will be moved into the appropriate Collection. Important: If you do not download and/or side-load the eBooks to your K4 prior to importing the Collections, the import will only create empty Collections. But if the eBooks are already on your K4 when you import the Collections then they will be moved to the appropriate Collection(s) as reflected in your Kindle for PC Collections. --------------------------------------- How to unsubscribe to Special Offers: Go to your Amazon Manage Your Kindle / Manage Your Devices web page. In the Subscribe column, click Edit next to your K4 SO. Follow the instructions on the screen that displays. You will be charged $30, which is the amount you received as a discount for buying a K4 SO model. --------------------------------------- Keyboard Shortcuts: The following is a list of keyboard shortcuts for the K4 NT.
I will post more tips as we uncover them. --------------------------------------- A mobi eBook of these tips is now available and may be freely distributed. I attached the book to this post. --------------------------------------- .... Last edited by jswinden; 11-03-2011 at 11:34 AM. |

Good idea to have a dedicated thread for this so we can keep track of all the uncovered tips on the new kindle.

Bookmark?
Is there any short cut for "Add a Bookmark"?
I have been getting used to menu | down x 4 | select but would love a quicker way. |

I haven't discovered one yet. As I'm sure you know, the new Kindle manual is terrible. It gives us no clues as to shortcuts, or much of anything really. so if anyone discovers any shortcuts please post them.

I have one! I got this from the CS rep. Hold Back & Keyboard button at the same time. This does a full refresh of the screen.

Best tip of all. Don't buy a non-touch Kindle. Buy one with the nice touch screen. If you will be making enough use of the keyboard, you won't like it.

But you have to admit, it is so blatant, it is kind of sweet

I think the short cut for bookmarking would be very useful
