Calibre slow down

Since the last 3 or 4 updates my Calibre (currently on ver 7.17) has slowed down significantly. Not sure exactly when it started Have approx 1200 books in the database. Running on Windows 11 with a fairly fast CPU and lots of memory. Any ideas on what caused the slow down and how to fix? (Sorry if this has been discussed before, if so please send me in the right direction)

FWIW, having 1200 books is a calibre library is not going to be the cause of any slowdown. I have over 5000 with no problems, and there are people on MobileRead with libraries in the high tens of thousands.

Converting books, loading books, editing/adding metadata.almost everything. I tend to download large descriptions for the metadata book descriptions, could that be an issue?

Um.... I'd suggest that this better belongs in the calibre forum; not the Kobo forum!

Unlikely, if they were all War and Peace size you'd more likely get a memory fault.

Composite columns (columns derived from other columns via templates) can slow things down… but usually not everything.

If you're using a 3rd party anti-virus, turn it off… if you can. Or exclude all calibre related folders - install, configuration and libraries from its view.

Try running with no plugins.
Try running in Safe mode.
Try installing Portable, give it access to your library via the Switch/Create library option.

I wanted to ask here too, because I have a similar situation - searching for books, editing metadata takes ages.
But so far I've had neither the time nor the inclination to go looking for the problem.
