uploading books covered by Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0
Can a book be uploaded here if it's covered by this Creative Commons license:
https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/. The part I'm wondering about is "NonCommercial: You may not use the material for commercial purposes." If you click on commercial purposes that says "A commercial use is one primarily intended for commercial advantage or monetary compensation." For the commercial purposes I'm thinking about how Mobile Read makes money from the Amazon links. The book in question is: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/58344...-h/58344-h.htm |

Eh? The text in question is Herman Hesse: Siddartha (Original german ed. 1922). But Hesse died in 1962, so the original is not PD anywhere but US, Canada and maybe Australia - and as such normally wouldn't be allowable on MobileRead, whatever license the american translator may find fit to put on it.
Or have I misunderstood something? Regards, Kim |

Moderator Notice elibrarian is right. You can upload CC-licensed work, as long as the there are no parts covered under copyright or other licenses. In this case, the text is copyrighted in life+70 countries, so it's not acceptable Sorry for the confusion |

Thanks, I wasn't even thinking of the life+70 question, only the CC copyright on the translation. I'd assumed that if PG had it available then he had died 70 years ago.

PG US follows US copyright law, which is quite complicated. Some works of living authors are out of copyright, some works of authors who died over 70 years ago are in copyright.
