What to dio with blacklisted Scribe
Ordered Scribe on Father day, shipping delayed, was sent a new one, then first one also arrived so now have 2 but the first one is blacklisted.
Contacted Amazon and was told I can send it back or dispose it. I don't live in the US so sending back is a major pain in the ass for me and not going to do it because of their mistake. CS told me if I try to use it they will charge me for it. I assume they meant if I try to log in? or else how would they know I am trying to use it? What are my options now? Is it possible to sideload books on it? Can I even get to the home screen without registering? I assume jailbreaking isnt possible since I can't log in |

You can sideload, but it's crippled. Or at least that used to be true.
Amazon's policy of blacklisting and making some local functions only work if registered, or only work remotely on web account (no computer control) is horrible. That's why I didn't buy a Scribe and gave away my Oasis 2. I still have DXG, K3 and PW3, but I will never buy another Kindle unless they change to make it fully functional without an account or the Internet. It's an ereader (with notes if a Scribe), it's worse than Apple's walled garden that the EU is pulling down. So you can sideload ebooks, no collections without a jailbreak. PDF annotation seems to need conversion to KFX print replica. Well, it was free? |

I don't need anything other than sidloading books on it. I am just not sure it is even possible to skip the login screen. I am worried they might charge me if I open it although I am not sure how would they know if I didn't login.
Yeah, it was free |

I don't wish to discourage you from trying, but I don't think that it's possible to skip login. It connects to Amazon servers at that step and registers device.

Hi,
I am in this exact situation. You can skip registering, and sideload books using Calibre. I have also been able to jaibreak it, and writte sticky notes on books sideloaded with KFX output plugins. I could not create notebooks. If anyone knows how to do, please let me know. I tried to copy a notebook created from the non blacklisted scribe, but could not open it on the blacklisted scribe. |

If both Scribes are registered (even to different accounts) you can copy nbk file from one into any GUID folder on the other and it will replace the associated notebook (I think). Instead, you can side load blank (or formatted with some template pages) print replica documents and they will have pretty much same functionality as a notebook, plus these can be in landscape or portrait, and you can zoom. KFX Input CLI can generate ePub from the folder containing the nbk (handwritten notes) associated with this side loaded print replica document. Notebook and print replica nbk's are not interchangeable, or at least nobody has figured out how to convert them from one to the other. I think it's feasible, but have not had more than curiosity to motivate further investigation so far. This would allow you to export print replica writing to a notebook, so you could for example use convert to text. And going the other way would let you gather 'notebooks' with books and personal documents in collections. Last edited by tomsem; 07-05-2024 at 08:59 PM. |

I dont need the notebook feature, just to sideload books on it. Are sure I can skip registration? There is no way Amazon could tell I am using this device unless I try to sign in right? I am afraid they will charge me for the device if they find out. So turning on the device and skipping sign would be safe? Also, what did you do with firmware update? I assume this will not be possible even manually right? |

I ordered a Scribe, and never received it, so Amazon sent me a second one. Couple of month later, neighbors remembered they received a package for me, tadaa! If I remember correctly (it was more than 6 month ago), I tried to connect to my own amazon account, and did not work. I did it several time, tired other amazon accounts, and it finally skipped the registration page, and was then able to sideload books. I did not update the firmware, and went on airplane mode eversince |

I think that's what you should try, login several time until it skips the page. That is what I did, and it worked. If you are afraid that amazon will notice it, you can always create a new account with a different email address.

But Amazon knows the device is listed on my name I think? Trying to login with any account won't notify them someone is attempting to use the device?
