Notebooks on unregistered Kindle Scribe?

So I know it's not apparently possible yet but I'm curious what the hangups would be? Or if there's a different app that would support PDF writing, since the Amazon notebooks one isn't available? Thanks!

Kindles don't run generic apps. Someone would have to write a custom notebook app and it could only be run after a jailbreak.

Yeah I guess I was hoping someone had already. I imagine nobody found a way to make the stock notebooks app work then?

Scribe needs to be able to generate and decode a GUID (used for notebook folder) that is associated with your Amazon account. That requires a registered Kindle so that the account hash (or whatever it might be called) is in the expected database. Arbitrary GUID notebook folder names are ignored.

The best you can do unregistered is to side load PDFs converted to KFX print replica format and use those as notebooks. At least I think that should work, I cannot check without unregistering mine.

I can try, though I've sideloaded a kfx file and I can annotate but not write on the pages itself, is it normal?

I have noticed the same. If you find a way to write on the page, let us know!

You can only write on the page if the book is in the print replica variant of KFX format. To produce that yourself without going though Amazon's send-to-kindle process you need to import a document in PDF format into Amazon's Kindle Create software, use that to produce a KPF file, and then use the KFX Output CLI to produce a print replica KFX file.

So I did actually make one and it works but I'm curious, why doesn't the Calibre addon do all of this? What's the step that's different, just using the Kindle Creator app?

Kindle Create is needed to produce a .KPF file, and it does not have a command line interface (or other automation interface), so the plugin cannot automate this step.

Though on almost any other make of large eink with stylus/pen you can write on the PDF. There is little value to an unregistered Kindle and less for an unregistered Scribe.

Does Kindle Create work on Mac? There is no Linux version.

Yes, Kindle Create runs on macOS and Windows, but not Linux.

I agree, if you aren't prepared to register a Scribe, don't bother to get one.
