James, M. R.: The Five Jars (illus). v1 . 24 May 2016
The Five Jars by Montague Rhodes James (1862–1936)
Illustrated by Gilbert James (1865–1941) First published 1922. This book is in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA. Montague Rhodes James was a noted British mediaeval scholar and author, but he is perhaps best remembered for his ghost stories, which are widely regarded as among the finest in English literature. One of James’ most important achievements was to redefine the ghost story for the new century by dispensing with many of the formal gothic trappings of his predecessors, and replacing them with more realistic contemporary settings. He is famous for his ghost stories, but this tale (his only novel) is a fairy story for young readers. It was possibly composed for his godchild and legal ward, Jane. “The Provost of Eton, who has written some of our best and most haunting ghost stories, is seen here in a lighter atmosphere. In The Five Jars he gives us a delightful fantasy of fairies and conversational animals. He relates his tale with such a convincing particularity of detail and such a clear simplicity of style that miracles seem the most natural thing in the world.” —Review from the London Spectator, 16 Dec. 1922. ---------------------- The text for this ebook was obtained from Project Gutenberg Canada, illustrations from archive.org. Embedded fonts for titles and small-caps. ---------------------- This book is already present in several formats in the Patricia Clark Memorial Library -- as a matter of fact, posted by Patricia herself. But I felt we needed an epub edition (also with illustrations!). So here you go -- prepare to read and be enchanted. . Nice. Thank you. You're right. A rather delightful tale, and a nice break from his usual somber affair, which I also like.
