Can't seem to create subgroups

Hello. I'm new to Calibre so please excuse what I'm sure is an elementary question. It must have been asked and answered many times here but I can't find it.

I'm using the latest build (7.15) of Calibre on a Windows 10 laptop. I've set up a hierarchy structure and created a genre called "Cooking". When I try to create a subgroup under "Cooking" called "French", it appears instead as a new genre ("Cooking.French") separate from the genre "Cooking".

How do I create a subgroup under a genre? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks for those replies. I followed carefully the instructions, hence my post here. I just checked, and re-checked, and everything under "Preferences" is exactly as described in the manual.

Thinking it might be a regional issue, I tried using a comma instead of a period; but whether comma or period, the result is the same, a separate genre instead of a subgroup. (Now using 7.16.)

The Manual is a bit out of date, the relevant screen shots are:

Now it's working! Under "Create a custom column" I had the "contains names" box ticked. Following your example I unticked it, restarted, and voila! working properly! Thank you so much!
