Flattening the battery to recalibrate
What's the best way to flatten the battery quickly? I'd like to calibrate the battery before we go travelling, and haven't got time to read the battery flat. Can I do a few cycles of plugging it into the computer while it's sleeping and then recharging? Will that do the trick, or does it need to be read to death, as it were?
How many cycles would it take? Thanks Oops, that title should read calibrate, not recalibrate I believe, thank you sleep deprivation! Last edited by nimble; 03-06-2010 at 09:32 PM. Reason: not paying attention? |

The fastest way to deplete the battery is to load and play some music.

Lion batteries do not require total flattening... in fact they dislike it... this is a myth hangover from the days of NiCd batteries and their memory effect.

If you carelessly discharge and randomly charge a Li-Ion battery it will last about 3 years. If you are extremely careful, fully charge and discharge according to best practices and micromanage your life and reading schedule to accomplish this, it will last about 36 months.
Enjoy your travel, take a charger, and stop reading long enough to look at the scenery. |

Ah, I didn't realise this was one of *those* subjects. Is the battery gauge reliable without calibrating, or is that question under debate too!
Good to know that audio files chew through power, I should have thought of that one. Hehe Georget, touche! Thanks everyone. |
