Baen format upgrade in the works
Over at the Bar, Arnold Bailey is talking about updating the Mobipocket ebooks released by Baen books. He says they are currently on v3, and they are looking at going to v4, v5, or v6. It might be worthwhile to go download them again after the upgrade.

That's very good news. As things stand at the moment, you end up with a MUCH better Mobi file if you download the LIT version of the book and run it through "ConvertLIT" and "MobiGen" than if you download the Mobi version directly.

Does this mean they'll be using jpeg images that will be large enough?

Try doing what I've just done. Download the LIT version of one of Baen's free books which have pictures (I used David Weber's "On Basilisk Station"). Run it through "ConvertLIT" and then use: mobigen on_basilisk_station.opf -c1 -s2 -jpeg You end up with a beautiful mobi book with nice full-screen pictures. All your (and I stress YOUR) concerns are over. |

I enclose screen shots from Windows Mobipocket Reader of the cover page from the original PRC version, the proposed new MOBI version, and the LIT version converted to MOBI with ConvertLIT and mobgen.exe -jpeg. The new MOBI and old LIT to MOBI versions are very similar, e.g. both have the author in MobiPocket's library view and have similar "contents" menus, but the new MOBI is still using GIF images and so has a very small cover image. The PRC version does not have a separate cover image - it is just part of the 1st page. It also has a TOC link in the document (seen in the screen shot) which is missing in both MOBI versions (all three have a TOC under "contents"). Both MOBI versions have a smaller version of the cover image in-lined at the start of the main document, which helps on the iLiad which can't display cover images (nor can FBReader).
For E-Ink devices, the larger JPEG images are definitely better. However, such images may not work with older versions of MobiPocket Reader. |

When you open a book in the Cybook you will not end up on the cover image but on the first page so I think you should inline a large image on the first page. To get to the cover image you have to press BACK and what is displayed then is not really part of the content of the book since the header and the footer is not displayed. Technically I think the first image in the mobi file is considered to be the cover image.

Download mobigen.exe from Mobipocket Developer Center. It is a zip file that just contains the command line program mobigen.exe. Copy this to your standard LIT directory. The exploded file will be a subdirectory. Open a command prompt window (one way to to select it via START > PROGRAMS > Accessories). Type in the command Code:
cd directoryname Code:
..\mobigen.exe filename.opf -c1 -s0 -jpeg |

I would love to get a job at Baen converting their ebooks into LRF. I could do it from home and do a good job too.
