calibre friday preview releases

Kovid has agreed to publish "preview" versions of calibre on Fridays when there isn't an official release. The first preview is there, at https://download.calibre-ebook.com/preview/.

Notes:
  1. Making the previews isn't completely automatic so he might forget or feel the changes since the last release/preview don't justify the time. For example, changes to news sources are automatically downloaded so don't require a release.
  2. He might publish a preview on some other day if he considers having it available for testing worth the work.
  3. The third part of the preview's version number will be greater than or equal to 100, as in 7.6.100. No calibre standard or point release will have a version number that large.
  4. There isn't a change log. See the calibre commits on github to see what is in the preview. The preview version number commit will be visible in the list of commits. All changes before that commit are included in the preview. Previews are cumulative; they contain all the logged changes since the previous regular release, visible in the log with a version number less than 100. Note: the first preview (09-Mar-2024 09:07) doesn't have this commit.
  5. These previews contain changes that will be in the next release. The changes aren't considered risky or they wouldn't be queued for release.
  6. If you are concerned about overwriting your calibre install, the portable version is in the preview folder.
  7. There shouldn't be any problem with reinstalling a previous version. If you are concerned then use the portable version.
  8. If you report problems then it is very important that you tell us if you are running a preview, and if so which version.

Yesssss! That might also make those occasional point releases unnecessary.

The point releases are usually for critical issues (e.g. data loss bugs), so I suspect we'll still get them on occasion.

I hope that most critical issues are found via the betas.

Yeah, ideally. "Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow" is how I think it goes.

How will I know when the Friday beta was made.

Example: Does this beta include this commit?

Yes it does, and I havent setup the tooling for this yet, when I do there will probably be a readme or some such in the folder indicating the timestamp and commit it was built from. And it will probably be in some other folder than betas. Maybe interim or something. And I *might* have the version number reported in the GUI change to show its a beta, depending how hard that is to implement.

I like "Early Access", as some developers call it. Preview seems more fitting than Beta, indeed.

Maybe "Preview" has the wrong vibe?
Quote:
The abrupt swing of the axe is another warning for users to be wary of anything from Microsoft prefixed with the word "Preview." While developers have long learned to be cautious about products labeled as such, the ever-decreasing attention span within Redmond has begun to attract scrutiny from other users, concerned about the company's habit of marking its territory with a preview that never makes it into General Availability.
