In the afterword for 1636: the Saxon Uprising, Eric Flint says this about the reading order:

Sorry....
I'm afraid I have to peek up from above the parapet and say I heartily disliked the bit I've read of his work.
I gave , I think, the 1632 a fairly decent go, more out of a sort of disbelief I supppose. It was my first ebook.... I found the basic concept admirable, and a real new twist....but then it started to descend the hill pretty rapidly. Frankly the gung ho, slap 'em down, shoot 'em first, almost glorification of violence, wrapped up in a cloak of necessity, bored me no end. I suppose I kept going as long as I did because hoped felt there might be a saving grace - beyond the original excellent idea. Sadly, it never came. ![]() But that's solely my opinion, and probably not shared by anyone who wants more of it ! |

I enjoyed the first three books, the rest got mired down in endless political bunkum.
Not my cup of tea at all. |

I have enjoyed the series a great deal, especially those written by Eric himself. These aren't just shoot-em-ups, which I find frankly boring. But there's some serious science, engineering and historical thought that went into them. Plus it's refreshing to have the UMWA be the heros. That being said, some of the books have been less successful, IMHO. Specifically, the ones by Virginia DeMarco I have not enjoyed.

Bumping up an old thread
Just about finished with 1632 when I thought about a search of MobileRead to see what other comments I could find. Thanks to pdurrant's comment, I've got a better handle on a confusing series.
I'm personally really enjoying 1632 and will continue with a few more, at leasts. |

I read up to 1634: The Galileo Affair. That book really cooled my interest in the series, which is a shame as I enjoyed the first few books.

Oh my...! I've been looking at Amazon reviews of the books she's connected with and it isn't often I see 71 reviews with 55 1 and 2 stars. Yeah, I think I'll stay away from Ms. DeMarce.

Yup, we completely agree on this. She is just awful. The ones in the main story line, written by Eric himself or Eric + Weber, are excellent. And many of the short stories that appeared in the Grantville Gazette are fine, though they are the usual mixed bag overall. But DeMarce can kill your interest in ever reading again.

If these Baen-related questions are tangentially related to wanting to "burn through" one's Planet Baen-derived credits, I heartily recommend patience and looking through sample chapters — with special attention given to the non-Baen-published books, some of which are little treasures.

I think too many people see the dollar signs of a successful series and start to think that if an idea might make a successful 2 or 3 volume story arc, it might make an even more successful 12 or 20 volume story arc. Authors and publishers need to ask themselves where "Wheel of Time" started to get crappy, and just how long before "Game of Thrones" becomes a chore to read? (not long, I'm thinking) |
