With Unseen Academicals, I tapped the hyperlinked number for the note. To get back, I tapped the number again. It did work at least somewhat inconsistently, particularly on the return trip. Then I would bring up Options:History to navigate back.

Thanks have already tried this and it seems to bring up the dictionary more often than not

I think the key is to SINGLE tap. Not double, which is what brings up the dictionary.

I am not sure they are numbers in the text in a dark square

Is the number underlined? If so it's a hyperlink. Tap the number (once) and that should take you to the footnote. Use the "History/Back" menu to get back to the text. You may find it easier to do so using the stylus than your finger.

Yes it is underlined, managed to get it to work tends to be a bit hit and miss
also if you tap the hyperlink number it returns you to the page you were reading
