Albert Payson Terhune (1872–1942)
Lad: A Dog (1919)

The life of a collie dog, whose character traits – bravery, chivalry, intelligence – contrast with many of the humans he encounters.
The author has based many of the stories on his own dog’s life.

I have added a cover picture of the author and the original ‘Lad’, also an illustration of the dog’s grave. The source was a scanned PDF at The Internet Archive.

I'm afraid that I haven't been able to find "Grey Dawn".
It's out of copyright in Canada, but Mrs Terhune seems to have renewed the U.S. copyright in 1957.
