Professor and the Madman, by Simon Winchester
Available for the Kindle.
Fictionwise also has it. Sony doesn't carry it. I've sent them an email. I've written about this book before. It's a non-fiction account of the development of the Oxford English Dictionary, following two principal characters (obviously, from the title). Fascinating. Bump it near the top of your reading list. |

yep. i got it from fictionwise (warning to other eb1150 users : the special characters for the phonetic transliterations are not available in our font. *sigh*. however you can still read the rest. note to cybook users : this book will display beautifully, including ALL special characters, using DejaVu free font).
it's brilliant, i've not finished it but i'm really enjoying it. Simon Winchester is a new favorite author. thanks for the original recommendation, Taylor. |

I thought I might already have recommended it. I should have searched before posting; sorry. He finally had a title appear on the Sony store, which made me search Amazon for a price comparison, and noticed Professor and the Madman as a Kindle Edition, so posted.

I second (third?) this recommendation. The Professor and the Madman is one of Winchester's best books.

I enjoyed his book "Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded" but it's not a good book to read on the beach in Bali. I'll have to pick up this book now too.

Also a good Winchester read is his newest: The Man Who Loved China: The Fantastic Story of the Eccentric Scientist Who Unlocked the Mysteries of the Middle Kingdom. It's available as an ebook.
