Hamsun, Knut: Growth of the Soil. V1. 16 June 2012

Growth of the Soil
by Knut Hamsun (1917)

Knut Hamsun (August 4, 1859 – February 19, 1952) was a Norwegian author, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. He was praised by King Haakon VII of Norway as Norway's soul.

Synopsis:
Growth of the Soil describes the spirituality of simple, hardworking people being encroached by the secularity of consumerism and the desire for more money than is actually needed to sustain individuals. Conversely, the novel also conveys a sense of belonging and social cohesion. It is a history of man in microcosm, the story of patient strength and simplicity - the hard but loving alliance between man and Nature. Modern man, by contrast, faces Nature only by proxy, through others, so the intimacy is lost. The novel is set in Norway.
