Combination Categories
We've been having combination categories nominated for 2013. Only one works while the others do not make any sense to be together.
Travel/Adventure <-- They do not overlap enough to make sense Science Fiction/Fantasy <-- It was already decided in a thread that they are different with only minor overlapping. The problem is that if we allow this kind of incompatible category combinations to be nominated then we open up the other really bad combinations. Even though there is more overlap with Mystery/Thriller, I think there is still not enough overlap. (nothing overlaps in an Agatha Christie book vs. a Vince Flynn book) It just makes a farce of a given month. I would like to have a vote on this issue. The reason being is that it should be stopped before it gets even worse. Biography/memoir (should actually be called Autobiography/biography) works because the two are almost the same. But for ones where it doesn't work because there are too many books that are not overlapping, they should not be allowed. So let's get this vote in place and finished before the category vote for 2013 so we can do away with Science Fiction.Fantasy and any other failed combination. There's nothing wrong with combination categories.

Then let's do kids books/pornography if combinations are OK no matter how incorrect they are. Then we can have The Cat in the Hat vs. 50 Shades of Alice in Wonderland.
Yes I know that sounds really stupid and it is. But it would be allowed if we did not actively curb incompatible combinations. Last edited by JSWolf; 02-04-2013 at 07:59 PM. |

You need to get over your disagreement with Lolita. I don't like it as a selection for other reasons, but my viewpoint isn't the only one. |

I just used an extreme example to show how out of hand it can get if we let it. If we have a vote, we can do away with these sorts of nominations and get back to real genres/categories. |

Doesn't epic fantasy fit under travel/adventure? Usually, a group of people are traveling around on an epic quest. Quest = adventure.

I would say no it does not. That's like saying if a book has a character that goes from one place to another (even just a walk down the street) then it fits in travel.

In epic fantasy, the people are traveling around, usually there's descriptions of the countryside/city, and they meet new people/cultures. |

^Agreed. Although I saw a list that listed Die Hard as the best Christmas movie ever.

Can we agree that we should take a vote on combination categories since most don't work and will just basically ruin things?
